Happy Memorial Day everyone! If you are a baseball fan, the barbecues and cookouts are even better this afternoon with a full slate of matinee baseball action. The most drama is in New York, as the whole sporting world continues to gawk at and opine over the foibles of Matt Harvey. Can the Dark Knight pitch well enough to stop making the moniker mostly a mockery, or will his struggles continue AGAIN and the clamoring for his removal from the rotation reach deafening volume?
There are some great matchups with more positive vibes as well. The Mets and White Sox is fun – Harvey excluded, the Reds and Rockies might yield six hundred runs, the Dodgers and Cubs are just great and Nats and Phillies is far more solid than anyone could have ever imagined.
It should be a fun day of baseball and nice Memorial Day celebration, so let’s make it even better for grabbing a winning pick.

Today’s Free Pick:
Los Angeles Dodgers +122 at Chicago Cubs -131 (Total: 7.5)
Alex Wood (1-3, 4.03 ERA) vs. Jason Hamel (6-1, 2.17 ERA)
When in doubt, it usually a pretty good idea to get on board with the Cubbies. They slumped a bit the last few weeks, but seem to be back on track. They’ve won five straight games after a sweep of the Phillies this weekend. They enter tonight at 34-14 and still looking like an unstoppable force. They are throwing their fifth starter tonight, and he has a 6-1 record and an ERA barely over two. That ain’t bad.
Hamel hasn’t been great in his career against the Dodgers with a 5.00 ERA in 12 starts, but in his two starts last year he posted a 2.13 ERA even though he failed to record a win. Alex Wood has worse stats on the season, but he has been good in his last three starts, posting a 1.96 ERA with 27 strikeouts. He is winless with a 4.76 ERA in his career against Chicago.
Right now, Ben Zobrist is the hottest hitter on the planet. He has 40 hits in the month of May and has reached base safely in the last 34 games. Look for him to keep the good times rolling today against Wood. Even better for Zobrist, the Cubs dodge Kershaw in this series, so perhaps this hit streak can grab some good traction.
It’s hard to get the Cubs at anything less than -150 these days, so I’ll take advantage of the rare opportunity to get them at anything close to even money.
