Easy winner last night as the San Francisco Giants got an excellent effort from Madison Bumgarner to earn a 4-1 victory. The 4-1 final gave us a winner on the under, a nice way to start the weekend off with. Saturday’s have always been kind to me, so let’s start another winning streak today. Much of my plays lately have been totals, but I am looking at one team in particular to hammer on Saturday afternoon.
Free MLB Pick:
Los Angeles Dodgers -115 at Chicago Cubs +100 (Total: OFF)
Chris Capuano (3-6, 4.54 ERA) vs. Jeff Samardzija (6-9, 3.75 ERA)
The Los Angeles Dodgers have waken up (and gotten healthy) and are unleashing their talents on the rest of Major League Baseball. While I say in many of my articles that this team or pitcher is one of the hottest in the league, I am going to come out and say the Dodgers ARE the hottest team in baseball. Not only do I think they are the hottest team, but I believe they are the best. I think if they can stay healthy we will be hearing a lot about the Dodgers come October.
The Dodgers will send left-hander Chris Capuano to try and take another one from the Cubs, who have won the first two of the four game series. Capuano has been kind of undersold lately. He isn’t a bad pitcher, but I think he has been treated like a bad pitcher by oddsmakers. His record of 3-6 and ERA of 4.54 isn’t too stellar, but he has been rock solid recently, and fares pretty well on the road. Capuano holds an ERA of just 2.60 in his last three starts, including shutouts against the Reds and Rockies. During that stretch Capuano posted a WHIP of only 0.98 with a .246 OBP. He will have the benefit of facing a team that struggles mightily against left-handed pitching, hitting only .230 in this respect.
Former Notre Dame receiver, who used to be catching balls from Brady Quinn, Jeff Smardzija, has actually been flawless in his most recent outings as well. Samardzija can be a little bit of a head case, though. A head case in the sense that he looks like a Cy Young candidate one game, and then looks like a AAA product the next. Nevertheless, his last three starts have been excellent, with a 1.80 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. However, if you look further back you’ll notice he got shelled against the Angels for 9 runs and 5 against the Pirates. Samardzija also isn’t much of a fan of pitching at home, where he posts a 4.90 ERA and shaky 1.51 WHIP.
So what kind of Samardzija are we going to get? Well, he will be facing the hottest team in baseball, so he doesn’t have that working for him. Nor does he have any merits to his name at home. The Dodgers also hit lefties pretty well at .260, with that number rising significantly since getting big bats back in the lineup. I see this line as one of those set by the oddsmakers as the Dodgers are due for a loss. But, I think the Dodgers are going to keep on rolling, which I see happening Saturday afternoon.
Free Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers -115
