Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks MLB Pick – August 29th

Forty three innings.

FORTY THREE. That’s how long it has been since the Kansas City Royals last crossed home plate, a modern American League record (post DH). It is nearly five entire games and with another shutout tonight, they complete a dubious entry in the Major League Baseball record book.

The most interesting thing about the miserable stretch is that Kansas City is STILL just three games out of the wildcard chase. A reversal of fortune this week, and all the misery and embarrassment is all for naught…

Baseball is a fickle game and team’s fortunes can change on a dime.

It is what makes what the Los Angeles Dodgers are doing all the more incredible. Even after losing two of three to Milwaukee, the Dodgers are still on pace for one of the best season in the history of baseball, two shy of the all-time win record at 114. They also lead the National League in total player games lost to the Disabled List. It has been a revolving door or injuries, and not just minor ones; Kershaw, Gonzalez, Alex Wood, Cody Bellinger, the list of players who have missed some time is lengthy. Their depth has seen them through.

A great example of that depth takes the mound tonight. There is still no guarantee Rich Hill will even MAKES the postseason roster, yet last time out he famously took a perfect game into the ninth inning and a no-hitter into the TENTH before losing to the Pirates 1-0 in one of the best games of the season. Can Hill recapture the same form tonight?

Today’s MLB Pick:

Los Angeles Dodgers -124 at Arizona Diamondbacks +114 – TOTAL: 9
Rich Hill (9-5, 3.32 ERA) vs. Zack Godley (5-7, 3.15 ERA)

Rich Hill was obviously nearly-perfect last time out, but prior to that magical night? Still pretty darn good. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start in his last ten outings and though he rarely goes more than six innings, he is handing the ball off to the best bullpen in baseball.

Arizona would be getting a lot of attention for their insane 42-23 home record, were it not for the Dodgers even better mark of 52-16. Arizona is winning nearly two of every three in the desert, and will be looking to solidify their postseason positioning with a big series against their divisional rivals.

This is a good game. It’s tough to bet against Los Angeles anywhere they play. It’s also tough to go against Arizona at home, especially with two solid and evenly matched pitchers on the mound. That’s why I’m betting on BOTH pitchers. Rich Hill is 0-1 against Arizona but owns a nice 2.70 ERA with 11 K’s in 10 innings. Godley 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in seven career starts against the Dodgers, including a 2.92 ERA in 2017. He is 2-2 with a 3.22 ERA at home this season, so runs in general, should be at a premium tonight.

I like a tense, hard-fought, low-scoring game tonight.

Today’s MLB Pick: RUN TOTAL UNDER 9 (-115)
