We grabbed another W last night to keep the September pennant chase resurgence moving forward as the Brewers got a much-needed win by roughing up Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole. It continued a frustratingly inconsistent 2017 for the Pirates’ ace, and more importantly, kept the Brewers right in the thick of the race and on pace with the Cubs and Cardinals who also won big last night (as well as the Rockies who are clinging to the second wildcard spot). They will be at it again this evening against rookie Tyler Glasnow.
It’s getting down to the wire now, and every game counts. The four teams jockeying for two spots are all big favorites with the exception of the underdog Rockies who are in Arizona. Can someone start to break free, or are we destined to come down to the wire??
Today’s MLB Pick:
Los Angeles Dodgers -160 at San Francisco Giants +150 (Total: 7.5)
Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.34 ERA) vs. Matt Moore (5-12, 5.31 ERA)
The good news for the Giants and Matt Moore is that the 2017 nightmare only lasts three more weeks. The bad news is, it is still alive and well tonight against a Dodgers team that seems overdue to vent some offensive frustrations. Moore’s 13 losses and mid-five ERA are bad, and his 1.49 WHIP and .280 opponent batting average tells you the losses are no fluke; he has earned most of them, lousy Giant offense notwithstanding. He has been better in August, but still a far cry from the blockbuster acquisition he once seemed to be.
Speaking of ‘blockbuster acquisitions’, Yu Darvish’s arrival was greeted with deserved fanfare, but has petered out steadily. The Dodgers have lost his last three starts and Darvish has personally yielded 13 runs in 12.1 innings. Not good. He gets a bit of a reprieve tonight, pitching in a pitcher-friendly park against a lackluster offense, but I’m still not willing to eat the -160 or load up on the runline with the way the Dodgers have been scuffling. Instead, I’ll take both pitchers to be less than great and for both teams to scratch out some runs.
An OVER bet with the Giants and their miserable offense is always fraught with some peril. But even if they don’t hold up their end of the bargain, I have a feeling LA is about to burst open with some vengeance. No better punching bag than 2017 Matt Moore. He has a 5.36 career ERA against the Dodgers, so barring a remarkable renaissance tonight, expect some Dodger runs.
I’ll take the OVER on the slim 7.5 total tonight.
Today’s MLB Pick: RUN TOTAL OVER 7.5 (-115)
