The National League West is shaping up to be the most dramatic pennant race in baseball. The Diamondbacks and Rockies are deadlocked for the lead in the division, while the Dodgers trail by only 1 game. Do you have a coin? Because you can flip it to decide who wins out in the end. Despite trailing, I think the consensus is still with the Dodgers coming out with the NL West crown.
If you’ve watched them play the last few days, you may have come to your conclusion as well. The Dodgers got their fourth win in a row last night, with an 8-4 victory over the Texas Rangers. The Rangers tacked on 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th in what was mop-up duty for the Dodgers’ pitching staff. After scoring 5 runs between the 3rd and 4th inning, the Dodgers didn’t look back.
The offense has been showing signs of life lately after dropping three games in a row. They’ve erased that tough stretch by getting it back and then some. We’ll see if the Dodgers are for real, though. They’ve had a knack of teasing their fans this season with these kinds of runs and then tail off for a few days. They lost five games in a row not too long ago.
Before going on this four-game winning streak, the Dodgers were 3-9 in their previous twelve games. So, it’s time for them to get hot going into the final month of the regular season. After this series, they welcome the Diamondbacks to Dodger Stadium for one of the biggest series of the year yet. Alex Wood will start opposite Mike Minor this evening in Arlington. L.A. Dodgers vs. Texas Rangers Pick
Alex Wood (7-6, 3.60 ERA) vs. Mike Minor (10-6, 4.40 ERA)
No more fooling around time for the Dodgers. If they don’t want this to be a wasted season, they’re going to have to dig deep over the next month. Anything less than a World Series is going to be a waste, but they need to take it one day at a time. The offense has been far too streaky to garner much confidence. They went from scoring just 6 runs during their three-game losing streak to scoring 31 runs in their previous four games. Alex Wood has been consistent as they come this season, though.
He heads into Arlington with an ERA of 3.60 and 3.00 ERA in his last three games. He also holds a 3.60 ERA on the road compared to a 3.61 ERA at home. Wood hasn’t allowed more than 3 runs since June 3rd. In his last three games, Wood has posted a 3.00 ERA. In his last seven outings it’s a 3.03 ERA. So, yeah, I would say that there is some consistency there. In 14 at-bats, the Rangers are hitting .143 with only 1 RBI against Wood. Mike Minor has been solid in his last three starts with an ERA of 2.41 and 1.12 WHIP. However, the Dodgers’ offense is feeling hot right now and it’s always a good idea to catch the Dodgers when the bats are hot. The Dodgers keep it rolling and keep things interesting in the NL West as we edge closer to September.
