DraftKings MLB Picks – July 19th

Another solid night last night with our DraftKings MLB picks! Clayton Kershaw delivered seven innings of shutout ball with seven strikeouts while our second starter Blake Snell held his own with six strikeouts, although he went just four innings which was a little low for my liking. Regardless, Didi Gregorius and Maikel Franco has big nights including home runs while the rest of the lineup chipped in offensively as well. Hopefully you were able to get into the cash for the second straight night as we look to keep it rolling on tonight’s seven-game slate!

P – Gerrit Cole (PIT) – $8,900 vs. MIL

Cole has had some struggles this season, but I don’t exactly trust tonight’s expensive arms and he has a high-strikeout team in the Brewers as his opponent tonight. Milwaukee’s 692 strikeouts against right-handed pitching are the second most in all of baseball and they should send six or more right-handed hitters to face Cole tonight who has posted a 3.89 FIP against righties compared to a 4.93 figure to lefties. Last time out against the Brewers he pitched seven innings of one run ball with five strikeouts.

P – Justin Verlander (DET) – $7,900 vs. KC

Verlander is another starter that has endured some struggles this season, but he has also had his fair share of quality efforts including the last time he faced the Royals when he spun seven innings of one run ball. The Royals rank 24th in the MLB with a .713 OPS against right-handed pitching this season and although the hot temperatures in Kansas City favor offense tonight, active Royals’ hitters have hit a combined .251 with just a .674 OPS against Verlander in his career.

C – Austin Barnes (LAD) – $3,400 vs. CWS

Alex Avila is likely the chalk play at catcher tonight, however for GPP purposes let’s roll with the lefty-mashing Barnes tonight against White Sox lefty Carlos Rodon. Rodon has only pitched 16.2 innings this season, but in 2016 he was much worse to righties with a 4.44 FIP, and a 1.44 HR/9 clip compared to a 2.34 FIP and a 0.54 HR/9 clip surrendered to lefties. This is good for the right-handed hitting Barnes who owns a stellar .286 ISO, .923 OPS and .388 wOBA against lefties this season.

1B – Paul Goldschmidt (ARI) – $5,600 vs. CIN

My top stack of the night will come from Cincinnati where Paul Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks will take on right-hander Tim Adleman and the Reds. Adleman has been worse to lefties this season, but still owns a 4.64 FIP and a 1.77 HR/9 to righties this year as well. Besides, it’s hard to argue Goldschmidt’s massive .303 ISO, 1.076 OPS, .446 wOBA and eight stolen bases this season against righties. The field conditions are hot and muggy in Cincy tonight so these right-handed Diamondbacks’ bats are certainly on the favorable side of this matchup.

2B – Rougned Odor (TEX) – $3,600 vs. BAL

While the cash players and the majority of ownership will be on the Orioles in this matchup tonight, I’m going into the other dugout and stacking the Rangers thanks to their opponent, right-hander Kevin Gausman and his 6.39 ERA this season. Gausman has also given up 2.16 HR/9 and owns a 6.34 FIP at home against lefties. Enter Odor who sports a powerful .227 ISO on the season as well as 36.9% hard contact against righties and will see his production rise along with his low .245 BABIP versus righties this season.

3B – Jake Lamb (ARI) – $5,100 vs. CIN

Aside from Goldschmidt it is Lamb who owns the best numbers on the team against right-handed pitching and is perhaps in the best spot tonight as Adleman is worse to left-handed bats. Adleman owns a 6.77 FIP and a 2.35 HR/9 clip to lefties this season to go along with a huge 51.4% fly ball rate to them. Lamb has posted a massive .282 ISO and 1.006 OPS on the season against righties and could certainly take advantage of the hitting-friendly confines of Great American Ball Park tonight against Adleman.

SS – Elvis Andrus (TEX) – $4,100 vs. BAL

Andrus is having a career year across the board this season and it should continue against the subpar Gausman tonight. He sports a solid .295 average, .160 ISO, .800 OPS and .343 wOBA against righties this season and has already swiped 19 bases off of them as well. He will be one of the top owned players at his position tonight due to the relatively thin shortstop spot this evening.

OF – J.D. Martinez (ARI) – $4,400 vs. CIN

The newest member of the D-Backs came over in a trade last night from the Detroit Tigers and should make his debut with his new club tonight. Martinez owns a .247 ISO and a.846 OPS on the season against right-handed pitching and also owns a .918 career OPS at the hitting-friendly Great American Ball Park. He should fit in well with this already-powerful D-Backs group.

OF – Shin-Soo Choo (TEX) – $3,600 vs. BAL

I believe we are getting Choo has a nice discount tonight as he will likely once again hit in the leadoff spot tonight against Gausman. Choo led off last night’s contest with a home run and now owns a .183 ISO and .792 OPS on the season against right-handed pitching, but he also makes hard contact over 41% of the time against righties which leads me to believe that this ISO and OPS figures are due for a raise moving forward.

OF – Kike Hernandez (LAD) – $3,100 vs. CWS

Forming a nice mini-stack with Barnes tonight could be outfielder/shortstop Kike Hernandez. Hernandez plays almost exclusively against left-handed pitching and it makes perfect sense considering his massive .349 ISO and .936 OPS on the season against southpaw pitching. At the moment Hernandez and Barnes are projected to hit right next to each other in the batting order so let’s roll with this low-cost, high-upside mini-stack tonight.
