DraftKings (Night Slate) MLB Picks – July 4th

Happy 4th of July everyone! As today’s main Draftkings slate is underway at 1 p.m. ET , this lineup will focus on tonight’s DraftKings night slate that contains five games. Let’s get to it!

P – Corey Kluber (CLE) – $12,600 vs. SD

The debate around DraftKings’ night slate tonight will be the Kershaw/Kluber decision. I will roll with Kluber as he has been the better of the two as of late and has posted double digit strikeouts in four straight, five of his last six and six of his last eight starts. Kluber also gets a Padres’ team tonight that has struck out over 28% of the time to right-handed pitching. Kluber has a strikeout rate over 30% to both sides of the plate and a whopping 38% strikeout clip at home, numbers that make him my top pitcher of the slate.

P – Kyle Freeland (COL) – $6,000 vs. CIN

It’s always risky to draft a pitcher who will be playing at Coors Field, however Freeland is interesting because he has been notably better at home than on the road this season. He sports a 3.70 FIP at Coors Field, however his FIP elevates all the way to 5.84 on the road. Also, he boasts an elite ground ball rate of 63% at home, which helps explain how he has managed to limit the damage in the hitting-friendly confines of Coors. He doesn’t have a ton of strikeout upside with just a 13.5% strikeout clip on the season, but Kluber should get plenty of those while Freeland should get a win against Homer Bailey and the Reds tonight.

C – Robinson Chirinos (TEX) – $3,700 vs. BOS

Chirinos has been the Rangers’ top power hitter against left-handed pitching this season. His .290 ISO is third on the team against lefties, but his .934 OPS, .581 SLG% and .391 wOBA are all top among Rangers’ bats when it comes to southpaw pitching. He will take on Red Sox righty Davis Price tonight who sports a 6.83 FIP on the road, a 7.57 FIP on the road against righties to go along with a 2.84 HR/9 on the road to righties. This is a nice play at a reasonable cost.

1B – Mark Reynolds (COL) – $4,600 vs. CIN

Homer Bailey has given up 14 earned runs in just shy of five innings this season and he is pitching at Coors Field tonight, so Rockies’ exposure is a good idea tonight. Reynolds’ .282 ISO, .996 OPS and .418 wOBA are all tops on the Rockies against right-handed pitching. He has 16 homers and 47 RBIs against righties this season too. With how this game is shaping up tonight Reynolds will be a highly owned player, but he could be worth the ownership given the aforementioned totals.

2B – Logan Forsythe (LAD) – $4,300 vs. ARI

Diamondbacks’ left-hander Patrick Corbin sports a 6.69 FIP and a 2.82 HR/9 on the road against right-handed batters this season so let’s roll with a couple Dodgers as well. Forsythe sports an excellent 1.042 OPS on the season against left-handed pitching which is the second best figure on the team next to Justin Turner. He is also 4 for 8 with a double in his career against Forsythe which tells me he is in a great position to do some damage this evening.

3B – Adrian Beltre (TEX) – $3,500 vs. BOS

I really believe this is the best bang for our buck today in this lineup. Beltre has gotten off to a slow start this season against left-handed pitching, but he has also made hard contact 42.9% of the time against lefties and sports a low .214 BABIP against them. Given Price’s horrible numbers to righties on the road this season and the fact it will approach 100 degrees in Texas tonight, this is a very nice play at a very reasonable cost.

SS – Elvin Andrus (TEX) – $4,300 vs. BOS

Last man up for the Rangers in this lineup is shortstop Elvis Andrus. He has really turned it on in the power department this season and now boasts a .194 ISO and a .775 OPS against lefties to go along with a tiny 11.8% strikeout rate against them. He is likely to hit near the top of the lineup against tonight which should give him plenty of at-bats against a struggling left-hander when it comes to right-handed bats.

OF – Raimel Tapia (COL) – $3,900 vs. CIN

Forming a nice mini-stack with Reynolds tonight will be speedy outfielder Raimel Tapia. Tapia has an .861 OPS and three stolen bases already through just 65 plate appearances against right-handed pitching this season. He is also 6 for 16 with two home runs over his last four games and should have every opportunity to showcase that power/speed combo as a lower owned part of the Rockies this evening.

OF – Kike Hernandez (LAD) – $3,900 vs. ARI

Hernandez is always a solid play against left-handed pitching. That’s because he sports a massive .400 ISO and a 1.027 OPS on the season against left-handed pitching to go along with a 41.4% hard contact rate against them. The Dodgers’ lineup has yet to be confirmed but it’s possible Hernandez moves up in the lineup into a RBI-favorable position due to his massive power figures against left-handed pitching.

OF – Jake Marisnick (HOU) – $2,900 vs. ATL

Marisnick was the final player included in this lineup but he could provide some nice value as part of a Houston team implied to score 5.3 runs tonight – the highest total outside of Coors Field. Marisnick hasn’t hit lefties all too well yet this season, but he did hit them to a solid .183 ISO in the 2016 season, so we do know the ability is there. As the cheapest player in the lineup we will hope for an extra-base knock from the outfielder and/or a stolen base to reach value tonight.
