Today's pick focuses on the second game of the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks series with Johnny Cueto and Patrick Corbin taking the mound.
It was a tough day on the diamond as we started the season with a second straight one-run loss. But as many a baseball pundit will tell you, it’s a long, long season, so plenty of time to get it going. But like any baseball pundit will also tell you, you don’t win a pennant in April, but you can lose one. So it is time to get things going today.
Speaking of getting it going, Bryce Harper homered for an MLB-record fifth-straight Opening Day yesterday, which is addition to being simply ridiculous, is also a nice sign as the 2015 MVP looks to bounce back from a less-than-great 2016 season. The Nats got the Opening Day win behind another pleasant sight, a strong outing from a healthy Stephen Strasburg.
Elsewhere in the National League, Noah Syndergaard went seven scoreless innings for the Mets in their 6-0 win over the Braves (0-0 game into the sixth inning before the Mets broke out) and Clayton Kershaw allowed just one run, striking out eight and walking none in the Dodgers 14-3 win over the hapless Padres. So the usual Cy Young suspects (including Mad Bum and Lester two nights ago) all turned in nice opening salvos.
Let’s see if we can get the winning started in 2017 with a look at today’s featured game.
Today’s MLB Pick:
San Francisco Giants -148 at Arizona Diamondbacks +140 (Total: 9)
Johnny Cueto vs. Patrick Corbin
The D’Backs got a walk-off win on Opening Day to spoil the two-homer heroics of Madison Bumgarner, but the G-Men will look to even up the series today with their co-ace, Johnny Cueto on the mound. Bumgarner gets far more attention, but over the past seven years, very few pitchers in MLB have been as effective as Cueto. He was 18-5 with a 2.75 ERA in his first season in San Francisco last year – pretty impressive stuff. He owns a 3.17 lifetime ERA against Arizona.
The Diamondbacks will be throwing Patrick Corbin, who had a rough 2016 – no way around it, but looks to improve this year as he is now several years removed from injury. His 5-13 campaign was emblematic of Arizona’s 2016 season, high-hopes with nothing going right. He had a decent Spring and broke camp as the ‘Backs #2 starter. The lefty has a 3.43 career ERA against the Giants.
I like both pitchers tonight for different reasons; Cueto because he is awesome, and Corbin because the Giants lineup is good, not great. The total of 9 feels about a run too high, so I’ll take the cushion and bet the UNDER tonight. I like a nice 4-2 type ballgame this evening, with a lean to Cueto and the Giants, but backing off because of the lack of value at -150.
Today’s Pick: RUN TOTAL UNDER 9
