Our nice 6-1-1 ATS MLB run hit a little snag Wednesday night with a narrow loss on our Cardinals underdog bid at +120 against the reeling Pirates. The Buccos kept their season alive for at least a few more days with a dramatic eighth inning homeun – and perhaps more notably, kept the Cardinals from homering for the first time in a whopping 25 games.
The dramatic win may not truly be enough to get the Pirates in the thick of things, but another win last night over struggling Cincinnati keeps them within shouting distance of both the Cardinals and a new, somewhat surprising, emerging threat, New York. The Mets have won eight of ten to actually take a half game lead over the Cards for the second wildcard slot. It’s going to be a fun three week sprint to the finish line in the NL…
Alas, we will get back on the grind today and see if we can start the weekend off with a nice winner.

Today’s Free Pick:
San Francisco Giants -185 at Arizona Diamondbacks +170 (Total:8.5)
Madison Bumgarner (14-8, 2.51 ERA) vs. Ruby De La Rosa (4-5, 4.15 ERA)
The Giants have gotten themselves into a position where they can’t mess around if they want to make the postseason. The sit five full games behind the Dodgers in the NL West and only one game ahead of the Cardinals to secure the final wildcard spot. That makes games like tonight; against lesser teams and with a dominating pitching advantage with their ace on the hill, absolutely essential. Simply put – the CANNOT LOSE and MadBum starts the remainder of the season and feel good about surviving it.
I like him to do what he does in these spots; dominate. I expect a vintage Bumgarner performance, lots of innings and very few runs. He has a 1.22 ERA against Arizona this season – so he isn’t the problem. The problem for the G-Men has been their offense.
I like that to be rectified tonight. The Giants have won 10 of 12 against the Snakes. Ruby De La Rosa is making his first start since May 30th and will be on a serious pitch count tonight. That sets the stage for the game to fall on the shoulders of one of the worst bullpens in recent memory.
It all adds up to a big Giants win, both literally and figuratively.
I’ll lay the extra run and take MadBum to dominate tonight.
