There is definitely something relaxing about having the UNDER in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel. No stress of cashing a winning wager, just the joy of being able to enjoy two excellent pitchers exhibiting their craft. Ultimately, it was Tanner Roarke getting the best of Madison Bumgarner who took his tough-luck seventh loss of the season thanks to one measly solo homerun in the seventh as the Nationals finished off the series victorious in the rubber game.
And by the way, in the midst of all the doom and gloom, the Cubs have ripped off a seven game winning streak behind ridiculous starting pitching and quality offense and are back to 28 games over .500 and three games clear for the best record in baseball. Both the Cubs and their closest pursuers Washington are off tonight before resume play tomorrow with series against Angels and Indians respectively – given the Cubs a golden look at opening up even more breathing room.

Today’s Free Pick:
San Francisco Giants +129 at Miami Marlins -139 (Total: 6.5)
Johnny Cueto 13-3, 2.73 ERA) vs Jose Fernandez (12-6, 2.87 ERA)
If you liked the pitching matchup yesterday, than you should LOVE tonight. Two of the best in the business link up tonight when Cueto and Fernandez get together in a battle of playoff aspirants in Miami. The Giants failed to score a run last night against Tanner Roarke, and suffice it to say, things aren’t getting any easier tonight.
Jose Fernandez enters tonight fresh off two rough starts, allowing eight earned runs in a total of just eleven innings. BUT, he hasn’t failed to strike out less than seven batters in any of his last ten starts, averaging JUST under ten a game in that time frame. His stuff is still real good, he still misses a ton of bats, and I expect him to be good tonight at home.
Meanwhile, Cueto has also experiences a slight post-All Star swoon, only notching one quality start in four outings and allowing 12 runs in his 23.1 innings pitched. But like Fernandez, his stuff is still fantastic so betting against both he and Jose’ having nice outings tonight would be a little ambitious.
And there is this: Jose Fernandez is 24-2 with a 1.62 ERA lifetime at home. That is INSANE. And not to be too outdone, Cueto has been a fine road warrior this season, posting an 8-2 record with a WHIP of just 1.12 outside the home confines of AT&T Park.
Expect both pitchers to be very good tonight and for runs to be at a premium. Fernandez just about never loses at home, but at -140 against Cueto, I think I’d rather stick to the UNDER total tonight.
