So…about last night…
Our bid for a fourth straight underdog went very, very poorly as the Cincinnati Reds fell behind 10-0 by the top of the fourth inning and made quick work of any hope for a payday. The good news for Homer Bailey is that his ERA actually went DOWN yesterday after allowing six runs in three innings. The bad news is that is currently resides at 27.00. SO, not so good…
Alas, it is time to shake off an ugly loss and get back to business tonight and start off the American holiday weekend with some fireworks. There are some fun series commencing tonight, highlighted by the Rockies and Diamondbacks in a pivotal NL West series as the Rox look to stabilize and stay in the race and the late night start for Alex Wood against the Padres. Dodgers vs. Padres may not be glamorous, but Wood is 8-0 with a 1.86 ERA and has a chance to make a loud statement tonight to be the All-Star Starters over his more famous teammate or Max Scherzer.
Let’s get back on track with a winner tonight in a matchup of two talented pitchers having less awesome seasons.
Today’s MLB Pick:
San Francisco Giants +112 at Pittsburgh Pirates -122 (Total: 8.5)
Johnny Cueto (5-7, 4.20 ERA) vs. Gerrit Cole (6-6, 4.11 ERA)
This sounds like an awesome battle of playoff-veteran aces, but the current stat lines and team records tell a much grimmer circumstance. Neither team is heading anywhere this season, and the Giants are as bad as they have been in decades. And while the season’s murky results can’t all be blamed on either struggling pitcher, they are at the very least, emblematic of their team’s fortunes.
The Giants are 21 games under .500, but things are looking up a little bit after their recent sweep of the Rockies. Can they rebound back into the Playoff picture? No, that ship has sailed. But with Bumgarner coming back soon and a decent veteran lineup, it isn’t unreasonable to think the Giants have reached the nadir of their season can still be a decent wager. Johnny Cueto hasn’t been able to be the ace they need this season in Bumgarner’s stead, but he has pitched well lately, looking fantastic in his last two starts and delivering quality starts in four of his last six outings (one missed QS status, only because he pitched five and not six innings, allowing just two runs).
Meanwhile, Gerrit Cole has rebounded nicely from early struggles as well and has LOOKED like a legit ace over the last three starts. He has allowed just a single run in each outing, spanning a total of 20 innings. He won’t be a repeat All Star this season, but he has looked like an All-Star caliber guy recently, which is a HUGE relief for the Pirates.
Add in a pair of sputtering offenses, and this game has the makings of a 3-2 affair. I’ll bet on both pitchers tonight to keep things under control and deliver a pair of quality starts. Even the mediocre Giants’ pen shouldn’t blow this one at a total of 8.5.
Today’s MLB Pick: RUN TOTAL UNDER 8.5
