The Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners meet for the second time in two days in their three-game tilt at T-Mobile Park. The Mariners struck first with a 6-1 win in an upset over Justin Verlander.

Verlander didn’t look right in Seattle last night. He was tagged early for 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st. JV exited the game with 10 hits and 6 earned runs allowed in 6 innings of work.
That’s unlike Verlander, but even the best pitchers are going to have their troublespots. It can be tricky to predict when it’s going to happen, though often impossible to avoid.
The Astros dropped to 29-17 on the season with the loss. They still maintain a 2.5-game advantage over the LA Angels in the AL West. The Angels are coming off three straight losses, allowing the ‘Stros to stay propped up.
The offense wasn’t clicking for the Astros last night either. Chris Flexen was by far the better pitcher, as he went 7 innings with 1 earned run allowed. All the way around, it was a putrid effort from the Astros.
Houston failed to make it six wins in seven attempts and extend their winning streak to three, but they stand a good chance of getting back into the winner’s circle tonight.
Logan Gilbert is scheduled to receive the greenlight for the Mariners on the mound tonight. He’s on the ropes and coming off some starts he’d like to have back.
Jose Urquidy is scheduled to get the starting nod for the Astros. He’s been adequate this season and coming off one of his better starts this season.

Astros vs. Mariners Prediction:
The Astros are asking Jose Urquidy to show up as well as he did in his last start against the Texas Rangers. He gave up 6 hits and 1 earned run through 6.2 innings in a 5-2 win.
It’s the third in fourth appearance where Urquidy conceded 1 or fewer runs. Going into T-Mobile Park, Urquidy has posted an ERA of 3.68 and a 1.50 WHIP.
He had a poor start against the Red Sox on May 17, but fired back with a strong look versus the Rangers.
His best asset in this one might be the ‘Stros offense against Logan Gilbert. Gilbert has solid numbers, but has been shaky recently.
Gilbert is going into this one with an ERA of 2.60 and a 1.10 WHIP. However, he isn’t in his best form at the moment.
Gilbert posted an ERA of 4.74 and a 1.11 WHIP in his last three starts. He’s allowed at least 3 earned runs in his previous four attempts.
Houston is hitting .295 with a .357 OBP in 47 at-bats against Gilbert. They’ve also notched 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in those at-bats.
Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Betting Trends:
Astros
- Record (Last 10): 6-4
- 6-0 overall in their previous six games after a loss
- 9-2 overall in their previous 11 games versus the AL West
- 5-1 overall in their previous six games after allowing 2 or fewer runs
- 4-0 overall in their previous four games after conceding 5 or more runs
- 20-6 overall in their previous 26 games as a betting favorite
Mariners
- Record (Last 10): 2-8
- 1-5 overall in their previous six games versus a right-handed starter
- 0-11 overall in their previous 11 games after scoring 5 or more runs
- 0-8 overall in their previous eight games after a win
- 0-4 overall in their previous second game of a series
- 0-4 overall in their previous four games on a Saturday
The Mariners have been terrible this season after putting together a nice game. Look at what they’ve done following more than 5 runs scored in their previous outing.
Seattle is also winless in their last eight games after they’ve won. Going into last night, the Mariners were on a six-game losing streak.
I’m looking for the Astros to bounce back nicely after a lifeless effort last night. Nothing worked for them. However, expect the Astros to respond in good form with a winning performance.
