We’ve enjoyed a nice start to the major league baseball season with a nice three straight winning days and a +37 units on $10 wagers. Yesterday’s win was a relatively easy one, and a nice sign for the Red Sox who got a nice pitching performance from Clay Buchholz who once again shut down the Yankee lineup. Today the Yankees will send another of their senior citizens to attempt to rescue a disastrous series, Andy Pettitte. He’s been good in the clutch for nearly twenty years, but asking Pettitte to be a savior is asking a ton of guy who has RETIRED within the last few seasons…
Our pick today will focus on another team with high expectations who hasn’t gotten the results they are looking for quite yet, everybody’s chic World Series pick, the Toronto Blue Jays.
Cleveland Indians +155 at Toronto Blue Jays -165 (Total: 9)
Brett Myers vs. Mark Buehrle
One of the reasons people are in love with the Toronto Blue Jays is that their THIRD starter is Mark Buehrle. That’s a pretty good rotation right off the bat. Add in the lineup with Jose Reyes and Jose Bautista, a good young bullpen and you have the makings of a team to be reckoned with. So far this season things have started slowly, dropping their first two games to the lightly-regarded Cleveland Indians, but I imagine things will be just fine in Toronto as long as everyone has some patience (Reyes was a part of a similarly-hyped free agent amalgamation last season in Miami and it didn’t go so well…).
The Indians, very quietly, have also made some big off-season moves, adding Michael Bourne, Drew Stubbs, Nick Swisher and Mark Reynolds. That adds some pop to the lineup, but might also relive the fans from any hot afternoons with the staggering number of times this team will fan! The all-time team strikeout record could be in play this season…
So far, so good for the Indians, who had a similar hot start last season before fading miserably down the stretch. I like the Jays to come out hitting today and to salvage the series finale. Buehrle is a good big-game pitcher and should fare well against the swing-happy Indians lineup.
Give me the Jays to win today behind Buehlre and Batista, who is 3 for 7 with a homer in his career against Myers. Cleveland hasn’t swept a season opening series since 1998. I don’t think they break that streak today in Toronto. Give me the Jays to win and to win with a little cushion.
Free Pick: Toronto Blue Jays to WIN -162 & Toronto Blue Jays (-1.5) +125
