The Nationals and Orioles’ bats decided to stay home yesterday, as the O’s managed to pick up a 2-0 victory. After having runners in scoring position early, and failing to come up with a single run, I had a feeling it was going to be one of those games. Needless to say, I am quite pleased that interleague ball is over after dropping my last two picks.
Free MLB Pick:
Kansas City Royals +175 at Texas Rangers -210 (Total: 9.5)
Wade Davis (3-4, 5.71 ERA) vs. Derek Holland (4-2, 2.97 ERA)
I imagine all of you missed the “exciting” rain delay in the Royals/Cardinals game early this morning. The delay was the longest on record in MLB. The reason for the long wait was due to the fact that the Royals took a 4-2 lead in the top of the 9th ,when the game was put on hiatus. If the game happened to be called the final score would need to revert back to the score after the 8th inning, 2-1 Cardinals. The delay ultimately ended up lasting over five hours before they took the field with the Royals leading 4-2, eventually holding on for the victory at approximately 3:30AM St. Louis time.
The Texas Rangers fresh off a 9-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, will be waiting for the Royals in Arlington. The presumably tired Royals, as it must have been difficult for them to get much rest at all last night. While the long delay boded well for the Royals last night, I believe it will catch up to them against the Rangers. I have been waiting for the Rangers to put a couple of monster offensive outings together in a row, and they did just that the last two days against the Diamondbacks. I got aboard the Angels’ money train a couple weeks ago as I had a feeling they were going to heat up, and I think the Rangers may very well go on a similar offensive run.
The Rangers send the reliable Derek Holland to the mound to counter Wade Davis. When Holland is on, he is on. If he gets into a groove he can be a very difficult pitcher to hit off of. Holland is particularly good at home, even in a friendly hitter’s ballpark, posting a 2.60 ERA. Meanwhile Davis has had a difficult time following up a productive campaign in Tampa. His ERA has ballooned to 5.71 after getting shelled in his last four starts, recording a dismal 7.06 ERA with three losses and no wins. The Rangers should be able to win comfortably here, so consider making Rangers RL a play tonight. In addition, the Rangers team total OVER is a solid play as well.
Free Pick: Texas Rangers -1.5 (-110)
Cincinnati Reds -127 vs. Pittsburgh Pirates +107 (Total: 7)
Johnny Cueto (2-0, 2.76 ERA) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (6-2, 3.58 ERA)
The Reds vs. Pirates game features two of the hottest pitchers in baseball at the moment. Both are flying under the radar a bit after stepping out of the spotlight for a little while. As an Astro it appeared that in 2009 Wandy Rodriguez was going to become a legitimate ace in this league. However, his production began to tail off a tad and people began to forget about him. In 2013 he is still a rock solid member of the Pirates rotation. The most impressive of his accomplishments this season is his ability to shutdown opponents at home. With a 1.93 ERA, .213 OBP, and ultra-impressive 0.73 WHIP, Wandy is one of the best home pitchers in MLB.
On the opposite side is Johnny Cueto. It wasn’t exactly production that made people forget about his name, but an injury. Cueto is currently injury free, and pitching in great form. His 2.76 ERA to go along with a .265 OBP is an excellent 2013 profile for the young righty. The most runs Cueto has allowed all year in a game is three, which occurred against the Mets and Nationals.
I like this one to be a pretty good pitchers duel, with the final being a 3-2, 4-2 kind of game.
