Julio Urias (0-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Luke Weaver (0-1, 16.20 ERA)
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will meet again on Saturday following a 5-3 win for the Snakes on Friday night in the desert. It’s a game that the Dodgers let get away. That was on the bullpen, as the Diamondbacks scored 4 runs in the bottom 8th to erase a 3-1 deficit late.
Tony Gonsolin showcased some nice stuff as the Dodgers’ starting pitcher. He went 4 innings, allowing only 1 hit and no runs. That effort was wasted in the 8th by the bullpen, though. A costly error set up a rally for the Diamondback as well. Justin Turner’s mistake was the game changer, and it all collapsed from there for the Dodgers.
It was a big win for the Diamondbacks. They’ll certainly take it over a World Series contender. The Dodgers regressed to 5-3 on the season, while the D-backs recorded their third win on the season for a record of 3-5. The San Diego Padres currently lead the NL West with a record of 6-2. And you know what, it wouldn’t be too overly surprising if the Padres win the division.
The Padres are a well built team with talent throughout their lineup. In a shortened 60-game season, it shouldn’t be surprising if the Padres win the division. Over the course of a full season, the Dodgers likely pull away, but anything can happen in 60 games. The Dodgers can’t give away wins because of errors in the field. Those will add up quickly in a shortened season.
Hopefully we can get through 60 games without any interruptions, but indications are suggesting that we could be running into problems. Next week is going to be critical for coronavirus testing. With positive tests on the Cardinals, their series against the Brewers is in jeopardy. Major League Baseball can’t afford anymore outbreaks this weekend. The Phillies and Blue Jays were already halted because of two staff members on the Phillies testing positive.
In any event, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks are set to continue on Saturday. Julio Urias had to escape danger against the Giants in his first start of 2020, but he left the game without much damage inflicted. Urias gets the nod for the Dodgers against Luke Weaver of the Diamondbacks tonight. Head below for our free LA Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks pick for August 1, 2020 in MLB.
LA Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks MLB Baseball Betting Odds:
LA Dodgers vs. Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction:
The LA Dodgers will turn to Julio Urias in his second start of the 2020 campaign. He escaped against the San Francisco Giants with an ERA of 1.80 in 5 innings of work. That’s great but Urias had to work hard for that 1.80 ERA. Urias yielded 5 hits and 3 walks for a 1.60 WHIP and .263 OBA.
It could have been much worse for the 23-year-old, so we’ll look at the positives. Getting out of jams is part of being a good pitcher. Urias has more than enough talent to be better than good. His career has gotten off to a bump start because of injuries, but when Urias is healthy, he can deal with the best of them.
Mainly operating out of the bullpen last season, Urias posted an ERA of 2.49 and 1.08 WHIP in 37 games. Urias has been trying to get over an injury since 2018. At 23 years of age, there is still a lot of time left for Urias to reach his full potential.
If the Dodgers didn’t see something in him, he’d be down in the minors. It isn’t easy to reach a major league rotation as a 23-year-old. Urias has been a dangerous pitcher against the Diamondbacks in his career.
The current D-backs have seen Urias in 25 at-bats and haven’t gotten very far against him. They are hitting .205 with a .244 OBP against Urias. Carson Kelly is the only Diamondback to take Urias deep so far in his career. The Diamondbacks will have to get better results from Luke Weaver if they want two wins in a row against the Dodgers today.
Weaver was hammered for a 16.20 ERA and 2.70 WHIP in his first start of the season. The Padres swallowed Weaver up for 7 hits and 6 earned runs in 3.1 innings of play. Weaver had a breakout campaign in 2019, as he netted an ERA of 2.94 and 1.07 WHIP in his fourth season in the majors.
Weaver has the potential to be much better than what we saw from him against the Padres. However, he gets a tough assignment for a bounce back spot, especially with the Dodgers losing last night. I will side with the Dodgers bouncing back to win the rubber-match on Saturday.
