Los Angeles Angels vs. Philadelphia Phillies Pick – MLB June 4, 2022

The Los Angeles Angels and Phillies Phillies will entertain the crowd at Citizens Bank Park for the second of three meetings in Philadelphia. Life in the post-Joe Girardi era went pretty well last night, as the Phillies torched the Angels in the series opener.

The Phillies went off for a 10-0 win behind the hot bat of Bryce Harper. Harper finished the evening with 4 RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting and 2 home runs at Citizens Bank Park. Kyle Schwarber had another productive outing, as he chipped in with 3 runs and 2 RBIs on 2 home runs from the lead-off spot.

The Phillies gave Girardi his pink slip after a 22-29 start to the season. They had lost five straight games and in seven of eight games.

The Phillies responded with a 10-0 win, and they looked at their best in that one. When people start losing their jobs, it’s often a wake-up call to others. Sometimes it triggers a big run in a team. We’ll see if that’s the case with the Phillies.

Their 10-0 win last night was a good sign.

The pitching was also working last night, with Zach Eflin going 8 innings and allowing 5 hits and no runs. The Angels’ Chase Silseth was chased out of the game after 1.2 innings of work.

The Angels are on a slide, as they seek to end a nine-game losing streak tonight. They started off well and looked like a threat in the AL West, but have reverted back to Angels baseball from the last decade.

The Angels have been good at dancing around .500 in recent years, and they are back to that point after losing nine straight games. Going into Saturday night, the Angels are 27-26 on the season.

Michael Lorenzen will look to get the Angels out of this hole and start thinking wins.

It’s going to be tough against the ace of the Phillies. Zack Wheeler is receiving the greenlight at home in this one.

Angels vs. Phillies Prediction:

Zack Wheeler isn’t the pitcher to see for a struggling team to generate runs. Wheeler didn’t start off well; he had a couple of trouble areas against the Marlins and Brewers, but had responded like an ace since April 23.

In his last five outings, Wheeler has allowed 1 or no earned runs. This includes three games with no runs given up from Wheeler. Wheeler has posted an ERA of 1.37 and a 0.97 WHIP through his previous three attempts.

He hasn’t been in good form on the road, but holding his own at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Wheeler has notched an ERA 5.57 and a 1.57 WHIP on the road.

Wheeler has posted an ERA of 1.48 and a 0.86 WHIP in 31 innings. In three of four starts at Citizens Bank Park, Wheeler has allowed 1 or no runs.

In 18 at-bats against Wheeler, the Angels are hitting .067 with 4 hits in 18 at-bats.

The Angels have been ice cold at the plate recently. Despite an impressive lineup on paper, they’ve scored 1 or no runs in four straight outings. Anthony Rendon is out until at least late June, but that’s not much of an excuse with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

LA Angels vs. Philadelphia Phillies Betting Trends:

Angels

  • Record (Last 10): 1-9
  • 3-13 overall in their previous 16 games
  • 1-11 overall in their previous 12 games after a loss
  • 0-7 overall in their previous seven games on the road
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games versus a right-handed starter
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games versus the National League

Phillies

  • Record (Last 10): 3-7
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games versus an American League right-handed starter
  • 4-10 overall in their previous 14 games at home
  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games as a betting favorite at home
  • 8-17 overall in their previous 25 games versus the AL West
  • OVER is 6-1 in their previous seven games

  • Look for Wheeler to pitch in good form this evening, as the Phillies continue to look good in the post-Girardi era. The offense hasn’t been too much of an issue for the Phillies this season.

Philadelphia is in the top-10 in the majors with 4.68 runs per 9 innings.

The Phillies are the seventh-best team in the major leagues, with 1.21 home runs a game. The Angels’ Michael Lorenzen can be good, but he’s also inconsistent.

Lorenzen is going into this evening with an ERA of 3.09 and a 1.06 WHIP. He has a 3.86 ERA and 1.23 WHIP on the road this season.

That is nice numbers, but he’s also allowed at least 3 earned runs in half of his eight starts. In his latest outing, Lorenzen allowed 5 hits, 2 walks, and 3 earned runs to the Blue Jays in 6 innings last week.

Lorenzen spent the majority of his time in the bullpen with the Reds over the first seven years of his career.

He posted an ERA of 5.59 in 27 spots out of the bullpen and a 3.99 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP in his career since 2015. He isn’t as reliable and dependable as Wheeler on the bump.

The Phillies on the runline at +130 looks like a good bargain. If you’re getting plus money on the Phillies by 2 runs it is a solid value bet.
