Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners Pick – MLB June 16, 2022

The Los Angeles Angels ended a 14-game losing streak, but still aren’t playing their best baseball. They have won just one game since then, with an 11-6 win over the Mets five days ago.

The Angels have started a new losing streak now. They’re going into Seattle off three straight losses, including 2 outs away from giving up a no-hitter last night. Tyler Anderson had struck out Mike Trout and needed to get through Shohei Ohtani for the second out.

Ohtani ripped a triple deep down the rightfield line to end the no-hitter bid. Then Ohtani got home off a Matt Duffy single versus Craig Kimbrel. Duffy made it to second base, but Kimbrel got Juan Lagares swinging.

Anderson was dealing, but it was another inexcusable performance for the Angels at the plate. They are too good on paper to be this useless with their bats. Underachieving has been a tradition for the Angels for over a decade now, so this isn’t a surprise.

The Astros and Angels were toe-to-toe before Anaheim nose-dived into the ground. Houston has a 9.5-game lead on the Angels going into Thursday night. It’s baseball, and a lot can change in a hurry, but this is also an Angels team that doesn’t live up to expectations.

Seattle is 28-35 with an 11-game behind the Astros.

The Mariners have lost three of their previous four going into tonight. They are good at being underachievers as well. A team with Trout and Ohtani has to be better, but the Mariners have also failed to match expectations.

The Mariners won the Robbie Ray sweepstakes, but they probably wish Ray chose to stay in Toronto. He’s been a bust so far and collecting money that could have gone elsewhere.

After breaking up a no-no last night, Ohtani is on the mound at T-Mobile Park. Ohtani starts for the Angels, while George Kirby is in a starting role for the Mariners. Head below for our free Angels vs. Mariners prediction on June 16, 2022.

Angels vs. Mariners Prediction:

Ohtani was responsible for breaking up Tyler Anderson’s no-hitter, this moments after Anderson caught Trout looking. Anderson left a hanger right over the plate, and Ohtani made solid contact. He ended the night with a hit and run.

The biggest positive for the Angels is that he’s been able to stay healthy. There aren’t any excuses for the Angels to be at 29-35 with a healthy Trout and Ohtani, though. The results as a team are going to have to follow.

Ohtani is the defending MVP, but he’s playing on a team that doesn’t give him the best chance to win games.

The two-way player is going into tonight with an ERA of 3.64 and a 1.12 WHIP through 54.1 innings of work. He’s appeared in ten games this season going into Seattle.

Ohtani is coming off a strong performance against the Red Sox last week. He allowed 1 earned run across 7 innings of work to end the losing streak.

It was a nice response for Ohtani after failing to find his footing against the Yankees in an earlier performance. After breaking up the no-hitter last night, he should play a leading role at T-Mobile Park tonight.

There is something about coming close to being a no-hit victim.

The Angels have not been in their best form offensively this season, but I have some confidence in them being more focused tonight. Coming 2 outs away from recording no hits in a game should wake the bats up.

LA Angels vs. Seattle Mariners Betting Trends:

Angels

  • Record (Last 10): 2-8
  • 5-16 overall in their previous 21 games versus a right-handed starter
  • 5-22 overall in their previous 22 games
  • 1-6 overall in thier previous seven games as a betting favorite
  • 0-6 overall in their previous six first game of a series
  • UNDER is 4-1 in thier previous five games after a loss

Mariners

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games on a Thursday
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games after their opponent scores 2 or fewer runs
  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games at home
  • 6-3 overall in thier previous nine games versus the AL West
  • UNDER is 5-1 in their previous six games

  • George Kirby has been in steady form as a rookie with the Mariners. He is entering tonight with an ERA of 3.65 and a 1.14 WHIP.

Kirby is going into tonight following a 7-6 no-decision.

The Mariners got the win, with Kirby allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs in 5 innings. The Red Sox scored 5 runs with 3 runs earned.

Kirby has conceded 11 hits and 5 earned runs in his previous 11 innings of work. He allowed 16 hits and 9 earned runs in two games, but stabalized well versus the Orioles.

Kirby has been a touch worse at home than on the road, with a 3.94 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. This is his first start against the Angels in his career.

If nearly getting no-hit against Tyler Anderson doesn’t wake up the Angels nothing will work. I believe the Angels should look like a winning team in Seattle for at least a night.
