We came up short last night when we took a shot on the underdog Oakland Athletics against the Los Angeles Dodgers. I was more betting against this Dodgers lineup than I was betting on Oakland. In my pick I talked about how many of the young Dodgers bats had yet to heat up and that I liked Oakland’s Sean Manaea on the mound. Well, Cory Seager and Chris Taylor led off the game with back to back home runs, and that was enough to win the game as Oakland couldn’t manage even one run.
When you are taking road underdogs, there is always going to be that chance that they lose, but when they win it more than pays off for the times that they lose. We will scratch this one up to variance and move on to the next one. Today I will take a look at the matchup between the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels.
The Los Angeles Angels are in Arlington, Texas Wednesday night for game three of a three-game series with the Rangers. The Angels are looking for the sweep as they have dominated this series to the tune of a combined score of 19-4. The Angels will turn to Jaime Barria (0-0 0.00 ERA) to make his first ever major league start. Texas will counter with Matt Moore (0-2 11.05 ERA). This game is an even pick ‘em as both teams are -110. The game total over-under is set at 11.5 runs. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM PST from Globe Life Park.
The Los Angeles Angels are riding high at the moment. Especially this potent lineup. The Angels are first in the majors in batting average, runs scored, home runs, and slugging percentage. Mike Trout and Justin Upton are providing the power and hybrid hitter/pitcher Shohei Ohtani and first baseman Jefry Marte are hitting for high averages. There appear to be no holes in this lineup, and you know your squad can hit when Albert Pujols is just an afterthought in the lineup.
The Angels will turn to Jaime Barria to make his first ever MLB start tonight. Barria has long been a prized prospect for the Angels as he was named their top minor league pitcher in 2016 and was named to the MLB Futures All-Star game last season. It is hard to know what to expect from the young man tonight, but he is a major league caliber talent, and I am excited to see him start his career in this one.
The Rangers have struggled badly on the mound. They are dead last in the majors in batting average against and are 29th in WHIP and 26th in ERA. A big reason for the Rangers struggles on the mound has been the performance of tonight’s starter Matt Moore. Moore has been absolutely atrocious this season as he hasn’t gone past the fourth inning in either of his two starts. Moore got pounded for four runs in four innings against Houston and for six runs in three innings against the Blue Jays.
Sadly, this wasn’t hard to see coming as Moore was really bad last season too. After spending all of his career in the American League with the Tampa Bay Rays and being somewhat serviceable, Moore was traded to the National League and was terrible. With the Giants last season, Moore went just 6-15 with an ERA of 5.52. He was one of the worst starters in the National League. Now back in the hitter-friendly American League, Moore has continued to struggle. It will be very curious to see how Moore handles this very hard-hitting Angels lineup tonight.
Normally when you are betting a game, you want as much information as possible about the game. Tonight, I have almost nothing on Angels starter Jaime Barria. He was solid in the minors, but that doesn’t tell me a lot about how he will be tonight against big league hitting. The one thing I do know a lot about is this Angels lineup and Texas starter Matt Moore.
Moore is going to get shelled tonight. He has nothing for this Angels lineup, and I would be shocked if he saw the fifth inning. When you know a guy is going to get pummeled like this, you immediately think about taking them over and not the game. But this number is 11.5! I have never seen a number that high for a game total! So, I have no choice but to lay off that big total and focus on the game.
I am going to back the Angels in this one. They are the better team, and with it being Barria’s first start I would expect them to keep him on a short leash. So even if he isn’t great, they will pull him before he can do too much damage. And we know that Moore is going to get shelled. So, I will take advantage of the tight line and back the much better team. Give me the Los Angeles Angels -110 tonight!
