Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Pick – MLB April 14, 2022

The Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers have a four-game meet at Globe Life Field beginning on Thursday night. The Angels are six games into the season, and they’re about around where most people see them three months from now.

The Angels are coming off a 4-3 win Tuesday at Angel Stadium. They are .500 with a record of 3-3 following back-to-back wins over the Miami Marlins.

Patrick Sandoval was strong through 4 innings, as he allowed 3 hits and no earned runs.

If the Angels can find some consistent pitching this season, they might break out of their .500 club percentage. There are no excuses if their pitching staff gets on track this season. For a team with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani in the lineup, results have to follow.

Ohtani is scheduled to receive his second start of the season against the Rangers tonight. He staying healthy is part of the Angels finding success this season. Everyone is well-aware of what Ohtani can do when he’s in the rotation and the lineup.

Ohtani’s ability to stay healthy has been his biggest problem for the Angels. It’s an ambitious claim to say that Ohtani is going to be in the rotation full-time for the entire season. Angels fans are holding their breath. He does get the call versus the Rangers tonight; we know that much.

The Rangers are off to a slow start, as they continue their rebuild after a 60-102 campaign in the AL West in 2021. They were 35 games behind the Houston Astros for the lead in the division at the end of the season.

Off to a 1-4 stretch through their first five attempts, it’s more of the same for the Rangers. The Rangers lost versus the Rockies in their most recent outing on Sunday, 4-1.

Chad Kuhl of the Rockies was strong through 4.1 innings with 2 hits, and 1 earned run allowed. Martin Perez was fine for the Rangers, though the bats offered him no help.

Angels vs. Rangers Prediction:

In his 2022 debut against the Houston Astros, Shohei Ohtani was in good form. In a tough matchup to open the season, Ohtani steamrolled past the Astros with 1 earned runs across 4.2 innings of work.

He wasn’t perfect, but it was a quality start for Ohtani. The 27-year-old enters with an ERA of 1.93 and a 1.07 WHIP after one appearance this season.

Ohtani might be the defending MVP, but there is a lot of motivation for him to go through a full season and dominate on the bump and at the plate. As a pitcher last year, Ohtani had a record of 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 1.09 WHIP.

He’s healthy going into tonight, so you have to like the Angels whenever he’s on the bump. Especially against the Rangers, where Ohtani has dominated this lineup. The Rangers are hitting .141 with a home run versus the native of Japan.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 3-3
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games on a Thursday
  • 15-7 overall in their previous 22 games versus a team with a winning percentage below 40%
  • 5-11 overall in their previous 16 games
  • 3-10 overall in their previous 13 games versus a team with a right-handed starter
  • UNDER is 4-0 in their previous four games

  • Record (Last 10): 1-4
  • 13-40 overall in their previous 53 games after a day off
  • 8-22 overall in their previous 30 games on a Thursday
  • 17-42 overall in their previous 59 games in the first game of a series
  • 31-70 overall in their previous 101 games versus a right-handed starter
  • 3-8 overall in their previous 11 games versus a right-handed pitcher at home

The Rangers are sending Dane Dunning to the bump on Thursday night. Dunning is expected to contribute for the Rangers this season, or at least, that was the plan when they traded Lance Lynn for Dunning.

Trading Dunning for an aging veteran? Dunning had potential in his rookie campaign with the White Sox. He posted a 3.97 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, and some didn’t look at this trade as good for the White Sox.

The White Sox have won the trade thus far, as Dunning had a 4.51 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 27 games, his first full season in the majors. Let’s be patient with Dunning, though. He’s still young without much experience.

In his season opener, Dunning allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs against the Blue Jays for a 5.40 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. He will have to give a better effort opposite Ohtani this evening. In 32 at-bats, the Angels are hitting .262 with a .273 OBP against Dunning.

I’d look at Ohtani and the Angels in this one at a fairly decent price against an inferior Rangers squad.
