Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Pick – MLB April 16, 2022

The Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers clash at Globe Life Field for the third game of a four-game series in Arlington.

They split the first two meetings, Texas recording a 10-5 win on a shaky performance from Shohei Ohtani.

The Angels took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st, and Ohtani was in a good spot with early run support. It was a trouble spot for Ohtani, though, with the Rangers responding in the 2nd, putting up 4 runs.

Ohtani couldn’t settle in, as he was KO’d for 6 hits and 6 earned runs in 3.2 innings. He came through big at the plate to make up for that disappointing start, though.

The Angels’ pitching wasn’t on par in the Friday matchup, either. Reid Detmers had a tough time getting through the Rangers lineup in that one. Detmers was tagged for 6 hits and 5 earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

The bats did work, though, with the Angels scoring 9 runs in a 9-6 victory. Kolby Allard had the most problems, as he was tagged for 5 hits and 5 earned runs in 1.1 innings. This is how the Angels’ offense should operate.

There is too much talent for the Angels not to score consistently this season. The pitching has to be much better, though. I feel like this is a broken record in Anaheim with the Angels’ pitching staff.

Noah Syndergaard could be a big x-factor for the Angels this season. If he bounces back to his ace Queens form between 2015 to 2018, the Angels will get a big lift from Thor.

So far so good in his first start this season. Syndergaard is called to the hill at Globe Life Field on Saturday evening. Taylor Hearn counters for the Rangers at home.

Angels vs. Rangers Prediction:

Noah Syndergaard was in prime form in his first start with the Angels. He said he felt comfortable going into this season, which was the case in his 2022 debut.

To open the season, Syndergaard was given a tough assignment against the Houston Astros. He handled the Astros well through 5.1 innings of work at Angel Stadium in a 2-0 win.

It was a standout performance from Syndergaard, as he looked like his former self with 2 hits and no runs allowed. This carries over from spring training where Thor was in good form.

Syndergaard posted an ERA of 1.04 and a 0.58 WHIP across 8.2 innings. Thor conceded 3 hits and 1 earned run in his effort in spring training with the Angels.

It probably doesn’t have to be a perfect performance from Syndergaard in this one. If he’s close to as good as he was versus the Astros, the Angels are going to be in good shape.

Taylor Hearn doesn’t present the biggest challenge for the Angels tonight. In his career, the Angels have a .383 OBP with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs against Hearn in 43 at-bats.

  • Record (Last 10): 2-5
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games at home

  • 2-6 overall in their previous eight games

  • OVER is 5-0 in their previous five games as an underdog at home

Hearn escaped without much damage against the Colorado Rockies, but that was close. He left the game with an ERA of 2.25 after 4 innings of work. However, Hearn had to dodge trouble at Coors Field.

Hearn allowed 8 hits and a walk for a 2.25 WHIP. Batters were finding their way onto the bases against Hearn, and he was able to tightrope his way out of damage.

The lefty is coming off the biggest workload of his young career. He appeared in 42 games, 31 as a reliever last season. Hearn finished with an ERA of 4.66 and a 1.32 WHIP.

I find it more likely that Syndergaard has the advantage at Globe Life Field in this one. Look for the Angels to edge the Rangers out for a 6-4 or 6-3 win.
