Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Pick – MLB April 17, 2022

The Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers wrap up a four-game series at Globe Life Field on Saturday afternoon. Anaheim rode the hot hand of Noah Syndergaard to a 7-2 win last night.

It’s the second straight start for Syndergaard he’s looked in prime form. There were plenty of question marks with Syndergaard after coming off an injury.

The Angels took a gamble on him, and it’s only early, but it has been smooth sailing so far. How his arm holds up through a full season is going to be the main obstacle.

Syndergaard received nice run support from the offense as well. Shohei Ohtani had another big game, as he followed up a two-home run night with another last night.

Ohtani finished with 3 RBIs and 3 runs on 2-for-5 hitting. He’s off to a fast start at the plate this season. If only he could stay healthy now.

The Angels moved to 5-4 through nine games on the season. If you were to predict where they’d be at this point, that’s probably going to be the most popular answer.

As far as their opponent on Sunday, this hasn’t been going as expected so far. The Rangers retooled their lineup, and there is something to like with the additions of Marcus Semien and Corey Seager.

It hasn’t worked out for the Rangers yet, but the season is young. Texas goes into the final game of this series with two wins in eight attempts.

They will send veteran Martin Perez to try for a split against the Angels at home. The Angels are scheduled to counter with another lefty in Jose Suarez.

Angels vs. Rangers Prediction:

Noah Syndergaard is off to a fast start for the Angels on the bump. However, the rest of the Angels’ rotation?

Shohei Ohtani is coming off a poor start, but I have confidence in him. His health is always a concern, though. The rest of the pitching staff could be good or not.

Jose Suarez is one of those pitchers in the rotation that fits in that category. He’s a pitcher that needs to be good for the Angels this season.

Suarez has a 5.66 ERA and 1.48 WHIP across 45 games in four seasons. He had his best season a year back, recording a 3.75 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

His first start in 2022 was adequate, with a 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP versus the Houston Astros. Suarez allowed 2 hits and 4 walks through 4.1 innings.

The Rangers didn’t show it last night, but they still have a dangerous lineup. They didn’t add Marcus Semien and Corey Seager to have a lackluster offense.

Texas is the second-best team in the majors in runs scored thus far, as they’ve notched 5.83 runs per game. However, the pitching staff has been leaky, with a team ERA of 6.08 going into Sunday.

Los Angeles Angels vs. Texas Rangers Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 5-4
  • 4-1 overall in their previous five games
  • 5-0 overall in their previous four games versus a left-handed starter
  • OVER is 4-0-1 in their previous five games on the road
  • OVER is 3-1-1 in their previous five games versus the NL West
  • OVER is 3-0-2 in their previous five games versus the Rangers

  • Record (Last 10): 2-6
  • 5-1 in their previous six games as an underdog
  • 6-2 overall in their previous eight games on a Sunday
  • OVER is 5-0-1 in their previous six games as an underdog at home
  • OVER is 5-0 in their previous five games after scoring 2 or fewer runs
  • OVER is 7-2 in their previous nine games on a Sunday

Martin Perez is consistently below average. That’s been the case for him since entering the majors in 2012. He has an ERA of 4.72 and a 1.48 WHIP through 222 games.

We know very well what Perez is about at this point in his career. He’s not getting any better than that production.

Perez posted an ERA of 6.22, 5.12, 4.50, and 4.74 in his past four seasons. In his first start this season, Perez allowed 7 hits and 3 runs against the Rockies for a 6.75 ERA and 2.00 WHIP.

Ohtani has gotten into a rhythm at the plate right out of the gate this season. The Angels are swinging the bats and with Ohtani in the lineup alongside Mike Trout, it’s already putting a lot of strain on pitchers in 2022.

They’re in the top-10 with 4.61 runs per game and a .250 batting average. The Angels lead the majors in home runs per game, with 1.69 a game to open the season.

In the series finale, I’m looking at a high-scoring game at Globe Life Field. Look for a 7-4 or 6-5 final in Arlington on Sunday afternoon.
