Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies Pick – MLB April 9, 2022

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies headline a Saturday night matchup at Coors Field. In the second meeting of a three-game series in Denver, Tony Gonsolin and German Marquez are expected to open the game and toe the rubber.

The Dodgers and Rockies had their Opening Day on Friday at Coors Field. Walker Buehler returned where he left off from last season, as Buehler lasted 5 innings with 2 earned runs conceded. Pretty good for a start anywhere in the majors, but especially Coors Field.

Conversely, Kyle Freeland was tagged for 5 hits and 5 earned runs across 3.2 innings. It’s a new season, but some things never change. Buehler is strong, while Freeland was able to last only 3.2 innings at home.

The Dodgers were led at the bottom of the lineup by Gavin Lux. Lux had a 2-run single to lead the Dodgers with a couple of RBIs. This is a deep lineup, and when the Dodgers are getting clutch hitting from Lux at the bottom of their lineup, the rest of the National League has to be concerned.

The bottom three in the Dodgers’ lineup on Opening Day were Chris Taylor, Cody Bellinger, and Lux. That’s some depth for the Dodgers. Bellinger batting eighth is a luxury that no other team in the majors has this season.

Gonsolin deserves a chance to be a regular member of the rotation, and he is getting it in 2022. He’s been a Swiss Army knife for the Dodgers’ pitching staff, with the organization warming up to him as more of a starting role last year.

Dodgers vs. Rockies Prediction:

The Rockies wasted a good opportunity to upset the Dodgers yesterday. Holding this lineup to 5 runs at Coors Field is an accomplishment. It’s going to very difficult to consistently do that at Coors.

The Dodgers are too stacked from the top to the bottom of their lineup. There are no weak spots for the Dodgers offensively. Expect the runs to flow for the Dodgers this season.

That could be the case against German Marquez tonight. Marquez has given up 5 home runs and 20 RBIs in 138 at-bats versus the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have also notched a .355 OBP versus Marquez. Marquez has a career ERA of 4.28 and a 1.27 WHIP in six seasons. He posted a 4.40 ERA and 1.27 WHIP for the Rockies last year.

Marquez faded off towards the end of the campaign in 2021. He had a 6.75 and 6.38 ERA in August and September after two strong months below 4.00.

Marquez could be in trouble tonight if that form carries over to this season. The Dodgers should prove to be a tough assignment in this one.

  • 19-7 overall in their previous 26 games at Colorado
  • 47-17 overall in their previous 64 games as a betting favorite
  • 53-16 overall in their previous 69 second games of a series
  • 43-8 overall in their previous 51 games versus a team with a winning percentage below 40%

  • 0-7 overall in their previous seven games at home
  • 2-7 overall in their previous nine games versus a right-handed starter
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games after a loss

The Rockies haven’t done much against Gonsolin when he’s on the bump. Gonsolin has been sharp, with this Rox lineup hitting .146 and a .213 OBP in 32 at-bats. Colorado is better with Kris Bryant, though they’re not scaring most pitchers.

As the second pitcher in the rotation to open 2022, this is a big year for Gonsolin. Gonsolin has a 2.85 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 35 games in his three-year career. Most recently in 2021, Gonsolin had a 3.23 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in his most work as a starting pitcher.

The Dodgers are worth a bet at this price. Their true odds should probably be in the -170 range at Coors Field. The Rockies did their best to hold down a dangerous Dodgers offense last night. Expect more pressure from the LA bats in Denver.
