Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Pick – MLB May 10, 2022

The Los Angeles Dodgers will try again versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday evening. They are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Pirates last night. It wasn’t the best look for the Pirates. In fact, that performance was one of their worst of the year.

The Dodgers had just swept the Chicago Cubs on Sunday Night Baseball. It’s very possible that the Dodgers had a letdown spot following six straight wins.

They made it look easy over the Cubs for three days at Wrigley Field. The Dodgers notched a 7-0, 6-2, and 7-1 win in an impressive display on the road. There was nothing to offer on Monday, though.

Julio Urias was fortunate that he wasn’t tagged for more than 2 earned runs. Urias allowed 11 hits through 6 innings and had to work out of some tough spots. He kept the Dodgers in the game, though.

With Jose Quintana spinning a gem on the mound for the Pirates, it didn’t matter what Urias was doing last night. The Dodgers mustered up just 2 hits against Quintana and 2 hits versus the bullpen.

That wasn’t the Dodgers at their best, clearly. They didn’t look prepared after such an impressive performance at Wrigley Field over the weekend.

Despite the ugly outing last night, the Dodgers are in a good position and playing quality baseball overall. I wouldn’t read too far into what they did on Monday.

The Dodgers are leading the NL West over San Diego by 1.5 games. They are 19-8 as opposed to 19-11 for the Paders, who have played three more games.

Kudos to the Pirates for coming through nicely last night, though. They advanced to 12-16 and will look for more with Bryse Wilson on the bump. Tony Gonsolin is expected to counter for the Dodgers at PNC Park.

Dodgers vs. Pirates Prediction:

Tony Gonsolin, who has been the do-it-all Swiss Army knife for the Dodgers in his four-year career, is looking for more of a full-time role in 2022. He’s been a bullpen game opener, reliever, and starter, though 15 games last season is his biggest workload.

It’s about time that the training wheels come off Gonsolin and the Dodgers give him a full-time starting role. This appears what Dave Roberts is going to do with Gonsolin in 2022.

Gonsolin has pitched 22 innings in five attempts this season. He’s been in good form with an ERA of 1.64 and a 1.09 WHIP. This has been consistent with what Gonsolin has done in his career.

In 40 career appearances, Gonsolin has a 2.68 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. He’s proven himself before, but the rotation has been so stacked for the Dodgers that they haven’t had room to utilize Gonsolin as a regular in the rotation.

There is finally room for Gonsolin to move into a full-time starting role and he’s taking advantage of the opportunity.

The Pirates have been next to useless against Gonsolin in 18 at-bats. They are hitting just 0.30 and a .208 OBP versus Gonsolin. Josh VanMeter is the only player in the lineup to record a hit.

LA Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Trends:

Dodgers

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 8-3 overall in their previous 11 games on the road
  • 45-16 overall in their previous 61 games versus the NL Central
  • 41-13 overall in their previous 54 games on a Tuesday
  • 16-1 overall in their previous 17 games versus the Pirates
  • 7-1 overall in their previous eight games at Pittsburgh

Pirates

  • Record (Last 10): 3-7
  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games at home
  • 3-7 overall in their previous ten games as an underdog
  • 6-17 overall in their previous 23 games versus the NL West
  • 2-8 overall in their previous ten games versus a right-handed starter
  • 0-5 overall in their previous four games after a win

Bryse Wilson has been in fine form with an ERA of 3.79 and a 1.26 WHIP. However, he’s only lasted an average of 3.2 innings this year. The Bucs are being cautious about overextending his use to open the season.

Most of this game will be the Pirates bullpen on the bump. Despite showing up well last night, it’s not easy to see a repeat. The Dodgers likely don’t lay an egg like that two straight days versus an opponent like the Bucs.

The Pirates bullpen has an ERA of 4.26 and a 1.28 WHIP going into into tonight. They are better than just five bullpens in the major leagues.

Last night was the first time that the Pirates have beaten the Dodgers in what feels like an eternity. The Dodgers had beaten the Pirates in 16 straight matchups before last night.

The Dodgers are 16-1 against the Pirates in their previous 17 meetings.

The Dodgers didn’t look like themselves last night, but expect a much more composed effort tonight. They got their letdown out of the way on Monday and likely show up focused at PNC Park.

After whiffing on the Dodgers yesterday, I’m not shy about going back to them on Tuesday night. It’s a good spot for them in a bounce-back opportunity. Expect a win for the Dodgers by at least 2 runs in this one.
