Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Pick – MLB May 9, 2022

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates converge for a three-game series at PNC Park this week. The Pirates are hosting the Dodgers after a 7-3 loss to the lowly Cincinnati Reds.

The Reds had won just three games before seeing the Pirates over the weekend. They go into this week with five wins after beating the Bucs in two of three games.

Cincinnati had been playing a pretty tough schedule to open the season and finally faced a team they could handle. The Pirates presented a solid chance for the Reds to find some confidence.

The Pirates enter Monday with a record of 11-16. They’ve been okay and coming off a couple of losses they’d rather not discuss over the weekend.

In their first game against the Reds, the Pirates came emerged with a 9-2 loss at the Great American Ball Park. This came after a 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers a few days earlier, so the Bucs didn’t show much commitment to getting back on track.

Pittsburgh is going into this series against the Dodgers with a loss in eight of their previous ten outings. They’ve been inconsistent at the plate and on the mound in 2022.

The Dodgers are coming off a three-game sweep of the Giants and Cubs. In their most recent effort, the Dodgers jumped all over the Cubs for a 7-1 win on Sunday Night Baseball at Wrigley Field.

The Dodgers are in good form with a record of 18-7 and a 1.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.

Julio Urias is scheduled to get the start in the opener against the Pirates on Monday. Jose Quintana has been pitching well for the Bucs and will look to stay in good form in a tough matchup.

Dodgers vs. Pirates Prediction:

The Dodgers are going to give the nod to Julio Urias to open this week at PNC Park. Urias probably isn’t what they wanted to see on Monday evening at home.

He’s likely the most underrated pitcher in baseball and continues to prove it this season. It’s been tough for him to get the respect he deserves on a talented Dodgers pitching staff, but this looks like a year for him to receive accolades.

Urias is off to a hot start, as he carries an ERA of 1.88 and a 0.92 WHIP through five starts into Pittsburgh. He goes into this one with a 1.06 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in his previous three outings.

Since allowing 3 runs in 2 innings against the Rockies at Coors Field, Urias has gone four starts without giving up more than 1 earned run in a performance.

Urias has allowed 2 earned runs in his previous 22 innings of work. He is part of a pitching staff that is first in the majors with 2.34 runs against per 9 frames.

Along with only 2 earned runs allowed, Urias conceded just 8 hits during those 22 innings. He should be able to handle a Pirates’ offense that has scored just 3.93 runs per 9 innings this season.

As a team, the Dodgers have held opponents to a league-worst batting average of .187 entering Monday evening. Also, note that teams have hit just 0.59 home runs per game, which is also the worst in the majors for offenses.

LA Dodgers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 4-0 overall in their previous four games versus a left-handed starter
  • 7-3 overall in their previous ten games on the road
  • 6-1 overall in their previous seven games on a Monday
  • 12-2 overall in their previous 14 games at Pittsburgh
  • OVER is 4-1 in their previous five games versus a left-handed starter

  • Record (Last 10): 2-8
  • 0-4 overall in their previous first game of a series
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games at home
  • 5-17 overall in their previous 22 games versus the NL West
  • 1-4 overall in their previous five games versus a team with a winning percentage better than 60%
  • 3-8 overall in their previous 11 games

The biggest concern for the Bucs this season has been their pitching. As a team, the Pirates are 29th in the majors, with 5.55 runs allowed per 9 innings. Jose Quintana has been in decent form, but the bullpen is likely to mess things up even if he contains the Dodgers.

The Pirates bullpen has an ERA of 4.29 and a 1.29 WHIP. There are only five teams in the majors with a worse ERA from their relievers.

Quintana has been the most reliable hurler for the Pirates. He has posted an ERA of 3.38 and a 1.25 WHIP across 24 innings in 2022. However, Quintana is horrendous against this Dodgers lineup.

The Dodgers are hitting .419 with a .480 OBP against Quintana in 84 at-bats. They’ve connected for 5 home runs and 13 RBIs in that time versus Quintana.

The Dodgers have made life miserable against a lot of pitchers in the major leagues, but there aren’t many that have struggled more than Quintana in their careers.

Note that they are first in the majors with 5.23 runs scored per 9 innings and have the bats to do serious damage against Quintana again. If the Dodgers are interested on Monday, they should clear the Pirates by at least 2 runs at PNC Park.
