Mariners vs. Athletics MLB Pick – September 25th

Back to baseball on Monday, after a productive Sunday on the gridiron with a record of 3-1. The Indians had another productive day themselves, earning another victory, 4-2, against the Mariners. They must really want that homefield advantage, as they’ve advanced to 98-58 on the season. The Dodgers are 1 win ahead with 99 wins for 1st in all of the majors. If the Dodgers can’t do anything in the postseason, you’re going to hear plenty of blame to go around.

There shouldn’t be any blame, there is more than enough talent for them to traverse deep into the postseason. With that said, if they don’t go far, it’s a problem of getting outworked by the team on the other side, point blank. I don’t want to say they choked if they lose in the World Series, but if they don’t reach, I am going to say they choked again. There are a few teams in the American League that would give them a tough time, in my opinion.

We go to the west coast on Monday night, where the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics square off. The Mariners were one of those seven or eight teams fighting for a wildcard for weeks, but a recent skid has sent them into the dumpster. They’re currently 7 games back of a wildcard and out of contention.

Oddly enough, once Felix Hernandez and James Paxton came back, it didn’t help any, as they started tail spinning out of control when it looked like they were ready to move forward for one last try. Felix has looked toast since he came back. He will get another chance to look good against the A’s in Oakland this evening. The Athletics will counter with Daniel Gossett on Monday. Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics Pick

Felix Hernandez (5-5, 4.57 ERA) vs. Daniel Gossett (4-9, 5.38 ERA)

Felix hasn’t looked anything like a king since returning from his injuries. Overall, Hernandez is on pace for the worst ERA of his career. He currently holds a mark of 4.57. His next worst was in 2006 with a 4.52 ERA. It would seem like time is catching up to him, and it doesn’t help an injury knocked him out of action for up to two months. Is he pitching at 100 percent? I’d have to venture a guess that he isn’t. In 7 innings since his return, Felix has allowed 6 earned runs and 5 hits. In total, he holds a 7.30 ERA in his last three starts. Additionally, in his last start, along with 5 runs allowed, he gave up 3 walks to the Rangers.

Daniel Gossett is coming off a bad start of his own. He allowed 9 hits, 3 walks, and 6 runs across just 4.2 innings of work vs the Tigers. The same Tigers whose lineup is littered with minor league talent. Prior to that outing, Gossett allowed 5 hits and 3 runs in 5.1 innings. In his last three starts overall, he owns a 5.62 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. Hernandez has been on a pitch count since coming back, limited to 70-80 pitches. The Mariners bullpen has posted a 4.03 ERA, which we should see much of in this game. The Athletics are on a five-game winning streak entering tonight. Their bats have been playing well. Gossett should probably be playing minor league ball, and Felix is not pitching in top-form. There should be runs scored from both sides tonight, so a play on the OVER is recommended.

PICK: OVER 9.5 (-110)
