Mariners vs. Athletics MLB Pick – August 9th

Dallas Keuchel couldn’t kick out of his mini-drought and got rocked by the Chicago White Sox last night. It was the worst start of his career, as he allowed 8 runs in just 4 innings. Keuchel was on the shelf earlier in the season, and the Astros really have to start hoping it doesn’t linger much longer. To a casual observer, it certainly looks like he is still having issues with his injury.

He should not be getting rocked against a bottom of the barrel offense like the White Sox. It was only their fourth win since coming back from the All-Star break. The Astros are going to need Keuchel in the postseason, so like I said, they better keep their fingers crossed this isn’t an injury that is flaring up again. He’s given up 14 runs in 12 innings now.

Not going to fault myself there, that’s one of those wacky nights where no one would have predicted he gives up 8 runs against one of the worst team in the majors. Anyway, moving on to the west coast where the Mariners and Athletics clash in Oakland. The Mariners need all the help they can get at the moment, with every game the rest of the way important as ever.

They are right there in a tight battle with several teams. This is new for Mariner fans. It’s been a while since they’ve been in the thick of a run at the postseason. It should make for a wild finish with around nine teams still alive. Rough go of it last night, as Keuchel got punched out quickly against the White Sox. Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics Pick

Yovani Gallardo (5-7, 5.35 ERA) vs. Jharel Cotton (5-8, 5.48 ERA)

The Athletics will partake in their holiday in less than two months, as their season hasn’t been much to be proud of. The founders of money ball are playing garbage ball, heading into Wednesday with a record of 50-63 after a loss last night. This is to be expected. The A’s traded Sonny Gray which essentially says we don’t care about the rest of the season.

In any event, it was a wise move because they weren’t going to go anywhere if he was still in Oakland. Taking the hill will be Jharel Cotton for the Athletics on Wednesday. The Mariners counter with Yovani Gallardo.

Gallardo has seen his career go from being a reliable option in the rotation, to a guy that you must hold your breath on. He churned out some nice stretches, including 2014 and 2015 where he posted a 3.51 ERA and 3.42 ERA. It’s been downhill since leaving the Rangers, though. His ERA skyrocketed to 5.42 last season, and in similar fashion is looking at a 5.35 ERA in 2017. The Mariners put him in the bullpen after a shellacking on June 17th which was becoming a regular occurrence. He’s settled down a bit but his control issues are still prevalent.

Since coming back as a starter, he’s yielded an ERA of 4.02 with a 1.34 WHIP. Conversely, Cotton has been beaten up for a 7.90 ERA and 1.89 WHIP in his last three. His ERA in Oakland, for whatever reason, has been horrific. He owns a 7.56 ERA across 41.2 innings which is a bit perplexing. I like one of these pitchers to get hammered today. Which? I’m not so sure, The numbers would tell you Cotton, but I believe the OVER is the better play here for our Wednesday MLB pick.

PICK: OVER 9.5 (-110)
