Another good day for me at The Sports Geek, as the Los Angeles Angles cruised to an easy 6-2 victory over the New York Yankees. The Yankees had their problems at the plate, which was expected, but they couldn’t even cash in Ichiro from 3rd base with no outs. The Yankees should continue to have their issues, but the public will still bet them because of the uniform they’re wearing. I wouldn’t invest too heavily on them going forward.
Along with the Angels bet, I hit the UNDER 6.5 in the Mariners/A’s game. This is one of your prototypical low scoring series that should continue with the trend today. Consequently, I am going to look that way again with two solid pitchers.
Free MLB Pick:
Seattle Mariners +110 at Oakland Athletics -130 (Total: 7)
Hisashi Iwakuma (7-1, 1.79 ERA) vs. Bartolo Colon (3-0, 2.92 ERA)
I certainly don’t believe this game has much appeal to many people, except of course us gamblers, and fans of either team. We’re in the business of making money, so it shouldn’t matter what game we’re making money off of, money is money at the end of the day. This pitching matchup has all the makings of a low scoring, bore fest. The only people that may find it exciting are the people that are on the under.
This will be the third consecutive Iwakuma game I have bet the under on, and I’m going to keep looking this way for the remainder of the season. The first under I had on Iwakuma ended with a 12 run 15th inning after 14 innings of no runs. Just had bad luck there that had nothing to do with his performance in the contest. The seldom heard of Iwakuma has had a season worth noticing. Other than Felix Hernandez, pitchers in Seattle often get overlooked because they play for the Mariners. No one was really familiar with Doug Fister when he was with the Mariners, but he received a boost of recognition with a spot in the Tigers’ rotation.
Iwakuma’s numbers reflect some Cy Young consideration, with a 1.79 ERA Iwakuma is one of the best in baseball. And at the moment, there isn’t anyone any better. In his last three starts he has an ERA of 0.00, big fat donut. The only run he has given up was off of an error against the Astros in his last start. Along with his spectacular ERA, Iwakuma brings an outstanding WHIP of 0.82 and OBP .223 in 2013.
While Iwakuma has an ERA of 0.00 in his last three starts, Oakland starter Bartolo Colon isn’t that far behind him with an ERA of 0.41. The only run he has given up was against the Milwaukee Brewers two starts ago. Colon’s career has seen a resurgence of sorts in Oakland in his 15th season as a pro. He’ll look to continue his success against a team with troubles offensively.
I thought this number would be at 6.5, so I was definitely happy when I saw 7. Along with two underrated pitchers manning the mound today, it helps that both squads struggle against right handed pitching. Give me the UNDER 7 for Sunday afternoon.
