Thanks to the Oakland A’s run explosion late in the game yesterday, our under bet got sank. Iwakuma could never get into a groove, allowing base runners nearly inning, which eventually gave way to an implosion by the bullpen. Nevertheless, it was still a good weekend, finishing 3-1 with yesterday being the only loss. Already into mid-June, we are beginning to get a feel for who the real teams are and the pretenders. One team featured in my pick today, the Arizona Diamondbacks, are still trying to assert themselves as a legitimate threat.
Free MLB Pick:
Miami Marlins +185 at Arizona Diamondbacks -210 (Total: 8)
Jacob Turner (1-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Patrick Corbin (9-0, 2.28 ERA)
While the DBacks are trying to assert themselves as a legitimate threat, they are still first in the NL West. May not be there by the end of the year, but they have surprised a few people nonetheless. Their series against the Padres didn’t help convince people any that they are ready to take the next step into being a major threat. The Diamondbacks got swept in three games, managing to score only 6 runs. They will send their young ace to the mound to try and get back on track at home.
The Diamondbacks struck gold with Patrick Corbin. The youngster has a perfect record of 9-0, and brings a pretty impressive ERA of 2.28 to tonight’s matchup. Corbin got touched up by the Los Angeles Dodgers last outing. He was perfect through five, but got tattooed at the midway point before getting yanked. Corbin is a different animal at home, though, where he has an ERA of 1.60 in 39.1 innings of work. Corbin has also only conceded 1 homerun in these outings. The only games where he has got hit have been on the road.
On the other side is another young promising pitcher that is beginning to turn some heads. Jacob Turner sat in the Tigers’ minor league system for quite a while as their number one pitching prospect before being dealt to the Diamondbacks. He doesn’t have the brand name behind him, but Turner has long been known by baseball scouts for several years now. He is finally getting his time to shine, and he is certainly taking advantage of it. He has an ERA of 1.80, and wasn’t fazed by going on the road in his first road start against Philadelphia to allow only a run. Turner is another pitcher that can keep the ball down and in the ballpark, not allowing a homerun on the year.
I believe the Diamondbacks are going to come out on top tonight, but I think it’ll be a 4-1, 4-2 type of win. Both pitchers should control things early on, but I believe the Diamondbacks will pull away later on. The Marlins are absolutely dreadful against lefties, posting a .214 batting average. I’m going to take a shot with the UNDER 8 with a lean on the DBacks RL.
