Marlins vs. Mets Pick – April 9th

We look to build on yesterday's runline winner with a plus-money line today.  Read below for today's pick in the Miami Marlins vs. New York Mets ESPN Sunday Night Baseball matchup.

We grabbed a nice easy winner last night with the Cubs on the runline in their 11-6 win at Milwaukee in an appropriately-anticipated offensive breakout after a relatively slow start in the first series.  Kyle Hendricks wasn’t as sharp as usual in his first outing, but the bats were more than enough to get him the win and keep him out of harm’s way.  It was a nice day for us, and a nice day for the Cubs, especially contrasted with the early afternoon for the Washington Nationals.

The Nationals allowed a staggering 12 RUNS to the Phillies in the FIRST INNING, and that wasn’t the worst part of the opening stanza.  Prized phenom speedster Trea Turner went out in the top of the first after pulling up lame heading into third base.  The team is calling it a “hamstring injury” and saying it could be a “couple of days.”  Let’s hope they are right…

It’s Sunday, so most of the MLB action is in the afternoon, so get any picks in early if there are some games you like.  However, for our featured pick today, I’m focusing on the ESPN nightcap between the Marlins and the Mets with a pair of Opening Day starters getting their second outing of the year.

Today’s MLB Pick:

Miami Marlins +160 vs New York Mets -165 (Total:

Edinson Volquez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Noah Syndergaard (0-0, 0.00 ERA)

Two pitchers will be making their second appearance of the season looking to remain undented in the runs-allowed column.  The two opening day starters had similar lines, though different feels.  Volquez was a pretty short stint, allowing four hits over five innings with no runs allowed in the Marlins loss.  Syndergaard was a more dominating and overpowering feel, with seven strikeouts over six shutout innings before leaving with a blister (which pushed him back to tonight).

There is cause for optimism with the Marlins offense after scoring fifteen runs in the last two games, but it is wise to remember that momentum is as powerful as the next day’s starting pitcher.  They don’t get much more powerful than Thor.  Syndergaard is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in three starts against the Marlins.  His opponent, Edinson Volquez is just 3-5 with a 4.99 ERA.  Advantage Mets.

The value isn’t really there at -165, but I feel pretty confident Syndergaard’s blister issue is behind him – there is NO WAY they are taking any chances with him, and that he will be dominant tonight and completely shut down the Marlins lineup.  Likewise, the Mets have hit Volquez in the past, no reason they can’t spot Noah three or four runs tonight.

There is some nice value on the Mets runline if you like Syndergaard stringing up zeros tonight.  The Marlins have outscored New York 15-3 so far in this series.  Look for tonight to be a strong regression to the mean and for the tables to turn.

Today’s Pick:  NEW YORK METS RUNLINE (-1.5) +130
