Mets vs. Braves MLB Pick – August 15th

The Braves’ bullpen like to make things interesting and that was yet again the case Wednesday night. After building up a 6-2 lead in the 7th inning, the Braves nearly blew another lead in the 9th. It was just on Saturday that the Braves were losers after going into the bottom of the 9th with a 6-2 lead. This time, though, the Braves were able to hold on and secure a 6-4 win.

It wasn’t easy and Mark Melancon made things tense with the bases loaded and only 1 out. Despite getting into trouble, Brian Snitker stuck with Melancon and he was able to get out of the jam. Melancon is currently listed as the Braves’ closer after newcomer Shane Greene botched his chances. However, if Melancon continues to load the bases like that, then Greene is going to have another opportunity to seize the moment.

If the Braves want to have success in the postseason, there isn’t much secret regarding what has to change. By the looks of it, they’re likely going to be relying heavily on regular season starters out of the bullpen who didn’t make the postseason rotation. The NL East crown is within reach, as they hold onto a 6-game lead in the division. Washington have been playing well recently, so they’ve been able to hold their own, but trading wins isn’t going to help with respects to the NL East.

The Nats are also battling for a wildcard, which they are currently in possession of. Thursday is shaping up to be a nice starting pitching matchup between Marcus Stroman and Julio Teheran. Stroman is still looking for a standout performance with the Mets. This will be his third outing of his career as a Met. Head below for our free Mets vs. Braves pick.

The Mets will be looking for more from Marcus Stroman down the stretch. He hasn’t helped much thus far and hasn’t made the Mets look too bright going after him. Yeah, the Mets went on a monster 16-1 run, but that has nothing to do with the Stroman deal. In any event, the Mets have won both of Stroman’s starts. He could have pitched better, though.

Between his first two outings with the Mets, Stroman has posted an ERA of 6.10 in 10.1 innings of work. He allowed 7 earned runs, along with 16 hits and 5 walks in those innings. So, while Stroman gets a free pass thus far, especially after the Mets won both games, he must be better than that to make the trade worth it. The Braves are hitting .280 with a .337 OBP against Stroman in 82 at-bats. On the other side, the Mets have a long history against Teheran in his career.

The Mets will eclipse 400 at-bats against Teheran in this contest. In 399 at-bats, they hit .216 with 10 home runs. Getting to Teheran at home has not been easy for visiting teams. Teheran owns an ERA of 2.52 in 60.2 innings of ball in Atlanta. He’s yielded just 5 long balls at home in 2019 as well. Note that Teheran has allowed 2 or less runs in seven of his last outings, and hasn’t given up more than 3 runs since June 24th against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

In his most recent appearance against the Mets, the Braves were winners by a score of 5-4. We’re seeing what’s happening to the Mets now that they have to play a winning team. During their 15-1 run, the only team they beat with a record greater than .500 were the Nationals, who they ultimately had their winning streak snapped against. Teheran and the Braves look like the right side here for another win over the Mets.
