I took yesterday off to focus on the first NFL card of the year, which came out as a winner. It’s certainly always nice to cash in on some money in a meaningless game. It actually feels like stolen money when it’s done that way. But, back to the diamond where I have been lights out this season, and look to continue my winning ways Friday night. While this game I am focusing on means little to one squad, the other is trying to keep pace to make things interesting near the end of the year.
Free MLB Pick:
New York Mets +183 at Arizona Diamondbacks -200 (Total: 8)
Jeremy Hefner (4-8, 4.23 ERA) vs. Patrick Corbin (12-3, 2.33 ERA)
I think there is this perception that the New York Mets are a decent team, but the fact is they are a pretty bad team. Outside of Matt Harvey and David Wright, who is on the downswing on his career, the Mets are a below average Major League team. If you want to talk about a decent, average team then look no further than the Arizona Diamondbacks. They have constantly hovered around the .500 mark, and now that we are in August nothing has changed. However, there is one game every week where the Diamondbacks excel from an average team to an outstanding team.
I am talking about when the young phenom Patrick Corbin gets his start in the rotation. Corbin holds an ERA of 2.33 with a superb record of 12-3. The only time he got roughed up was on July 2nd against these same Mets, but after that he rattled off five straight games allowing only 1 run. I think it is revenge time for Corbin in his own backyard. Speaking of his own backyard, Corbin is nearly unhittable at home, where he has an ERA of 1.50 with a 0.96 WHIP and 8-1 record. He has also been on point in his last three games with a 2.25 ERA.
The Mets have won their last three games, sweeping the Colorado Rockies in a three game set. Even then, the Mets struggled to score runs and only won due to excellent pitching against a regressing Rockies’ offense. If you look at the Mets’ final scores this season, you will find a lot of games where they score 1 or 2 runs. I can’t see them doing much against Corbin at home.
Mets’ starter Jonathan Hefner got off to a great start this season and at one point was a nice compliment to Matt Harvey. But since allowing 8 runs in 2 innings pitched against the Phillies on July 19th, Hefner has been atrocious. If you don’t even include that game, and just look at his last three starts, the Phillies’ game being his fourth, he has an ERA of 6.32 and .352 OBP. I don’t think the Diamondbacks are a great team by any means, but with that said, they are great with Corbin on the mound. I like the Diamondbacks to take care of the Mets fairly easily Friday night, so I will be on the RL.
