It’s been one of the tougher MLB slumps I’ve endured over the past week, but with a new week ad new matchups, hopefully we can get back to the winning ways of the first two weeks of the season. There are a host of great series matchups kicking off tonight, highlighted by the ESPN game, Washington and Atlanta. The NL East tightened up a ton this weekend with the Braves getting swept in Detroit while Washington took three of four from Cincinnati.
The National League Central, the only division in baseball with four teams over .500, will beat themselves up a bit this week as the four teams are matched against each other; Milwaukee in Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati going to St. Louis for the second time already this season.
For today’s first pick, let’s head to the American League – the matchups aren’t quite as glamorous, but there are a few good lines to consider.
Cleveland Indians +132 at Kansas City Royals -141 (Total: 9)
Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2, 10.06 ERA) vs. Wade Davis (2-1, 3.20 ERA)
There was some hope that Ubaldo Jimenez might be able to recapture some of his form from 2010, but to this point in the season, it has been nothing but disaster. His ERA is over 10, his WHIP is at 1.59 and he is averaging less than 5 innings per appearance. It’s been pretty bad.
Meanwhile, Wade Davis has posted a good ERA for the Royals and his team has been a solid 3-1 in games he’s started. However, he might be living a little fortunately, considering his WHIP is through the roof. His 1.68 WHIP is actually HIGHER than Ubaldo Jimenez. It’s tough to allow close to two base runners an inning and still escape with wins and an ERA in the low 3’s.
This game looks like a good opportunity to put some crooked numbers on the scoreboard. It also favors the Royals, given their hot play and the fact that Jimenez has been so absolutely awful.
Free Pick: Run TOTAL OVER 9 & Kansas City Royals to WIN -141
New York Mets -144 at Miami Marlins +136 (Total: 7)
Matt Harvey (4-0, 1.54 ERA) vs. Jose Fernandez (0-2, 4.50 ERA)
There have been two really awesome bets in MLB this season; betting ON Matt Harvey and betting AGAINST the Miami Marlins. Tonight, we get the opportunity to do BOTH at the exact same time. Harvey has been absolutely dominant. The Marlins have been absolutely inept.
I like this matchup a ton. I’m taking the Mets to win, and doubling-up on the runline at +115.
The Marlins have hit a little better lately, scoring an average of 4.3 runs over the past seven contests. It is a marked improvement over their season output, which is still last in all of baseball by 14 runs scored. However, that improvement wasn’t against the hottest young pitcher in baseball in Matt Harvey. I like the beat to roll on tonight for the young phenom…
