Mets vs. Nationals Pick MLB – Sept 9th

Flawless Victory. Fatality.  Mets win.

The New York Mets just Mortal Kombat’ed the head off their rival Nationals last night, and I don’t think there’s any getting up off the mat. The Nats jumped all over the possibly-distracted Matt Harvey to take a 7-1 lead. Should be a win, right? Then they throw Strasburg today and escape with a series win and a manageable four-game deficit with three and half weeks to play. But, it didn’t quite play out that way…

Instead, the Nats gave up six runs in the seventh and then allowed a pinch-hit homerun in the eighth to see their season appropriately slayed in an 8-7 loss. It was 2015 Nationals baseball in a microcosm, and you can bet Bryce Harper WISHES the fans would have left three innings early tonight so they could have averted their eyes from the Hindenburg…

We also blew up last night as Francisco Liriano exercised his Great American Ball Park demons in fine fashion en route to an easy win for the Buccos. Don’t look now, but with the Cubbies taking the Cards behind the woodshed the last two day, Pittsburgh is now just four games back in the loss column…

Jacob de Grom vs. Stephen Strasburg

What else can you say about the Nats at this point. Jonathon Pappelbon is on record as saying the season “isn’t over yet.” I’ll go on the record in saying is disagree. It isn’t that the Mets are unbeatable. In fact, with the Harvey situation and de Grom scuffling a little bit over his last three starts, in any other division with any other pursuer, I’d say the race is far from over. But not these Nats. Bryce won’t be getting a ring this year but he will be getting the month of October for extended vacation.

However, they do have a guy on the mound tonight with the potential to be electric and who posted a 1.77 ERA in his four starts prior to the last one… which lasted just four innings after tightness in his arm. That’s the Nats this year. A little bit of good and a whole lot of head-shaking bad.

Meanwhile, de Grom hasn’t been great in his last three outings overall, but his season body of work is phenomenal and his recent road performances have been admirable. He has allowed two or less runs in five of his last seven outings and is 4-0 with a 2.77 ERA overall. I like him to pitch well tonight, if for no other reason than the overall moxie and looseness the Mets are playing with right now. They are playing fearless baseball while the Nats continue to pucker and crush under the weight of unmet expectations. And I can get deGrom AND plus-money???

Consider tonight the final nail in the season’s coffin.
