Mets vs. Phillies Pick – April 10th

MLB's second week kicks off today with some really interesting MLB series - especially in the National League.  Tonight's pick focuses on the New York Mets visiting the Philadelphia Phillies.

We notched a second straight winner last night with our first plus-money underdog winner of the MLB season as Thor brought the hammer to Citi Field last night and defeated the Miami Marlins 5-2.  The win evened the Marlins and Mets at 3-3 on the season, putting them even with basically the entire division except the slow-starting Atlanta Braves who have dropped a few one-run games en route to a 1-5 start to the season.

MLB kicks off the third series of the season with a whole slate of fresh new series.  The surprising Cincinnati Reds will try to keep thing going in Pittsburgh and the even-more surprising (6-1) Diamondbacks will head to San Francisco with the Giants (2-5) looking to get things going after some rough nights at the plate and standard bullpen issues.

Elsewhere, the two best series are Washington at St. Louis and the Los Angeles Dodgers visiting Wrigley where the Cubs will be hoisting a World Champion banner this evening.  If you like sports and storylines, it’s probably the best option on television tonight at 8pm on ESPN.

Let’s see if we can start Week Two on a winning note!

Today’s MLB Pick:

New York Mets -140 at Philadelphia Phillies +133 (Total: 7.5)
Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Jared Eickhoff (0-1, 2.70 ERA)

The Mets never seem short on a starting pitcher advantage when you first glance at the day’s lines.  Of course, it isn’t like they are going 120-42, so the starting pitching edge isn’t exactly a “free win” but when you see deGrom or Syndergaard (and possibly soon, Harvey and Wheeler?) at a relatively flat line, you have to take a look.  Such is the case today.

The Mets will look to build on last night’s comfortable winner with their co-ace on the hill looking to remain perfect in his second outing of the season.  deGrom sputtered a bit last season with a 7-8 record and 3.04 ERA before being shut down over injury concerns.  At points last year, his fast ball topped out at 93-94 mph.  This year, in his scoreless six inning debut, his fastball was dotting 98 – a REALLY good  sign for deGrom and the Mets.  He enters tonight’s visit to Citizen’s Bank Park with a 4-2 career record against the Phillies and a 2.42 ERA in seven career starts.

The Phillies will counter with the Jared Eickhoff who took the loss in his first appearance this year despite allowing just two runs in six and two-thirds innings to the Cincinnati Reds.  The lack of run support isn’t anything new – and will likely continue tonight.  He received one or less runs of support in 18 of his 42 career starts – stunning stuff.  He owns a 1-4 mark against the Mets, despite (trend emerging here) a nice 2.66 ERA.

I like the same old story tonight – decent out from Eickhoff but not enough mates denting the plate.

I’ll take the Mets to win at the attractive price of -140.

Today’s Pick:  NEW YORK METS to WIN -140
