The Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres enter the second meeting of a four-game series at Petco Park on Saturday. Miami is on a five-game losing streak after winning seven in a row. Everything was going well for the Marlins, and it didn’t last long in typical Marlins fashion.
The Marlins go into Friday night with a record of 12-13 after going through a nice run. San Diego had a nice start at 17-9 with wins in six of their previous eight attempts.

The Padres are eight games above .500 and a half-game behind the LA Dodgers in the NL West. The NL West was projected to be a close race between the Dodgers and Padres last year.
We should have a quality pitching matchup on our hands Friday night at Petco Park. Sandy Alcantara and Yu Darvish are slated to get the starting nod.

Marlins vs. Padres Prediction:
Sandy Alcantara steps onto the bump at Petco Park for a Friday night matchup in San Diego. Alcantara is one of many hurlers that have come through Miami that doesn’t get the credit they deserve.
He has been steady again this season, as Alcantara carries an ERA of 2.90 and a 1.29 WHIP into San Diego. However, Alcantara is coming off a big miss against the Seattle Mariners at home.
The Mariners throttled Alcantra for 6 hits and 5 earned runs in 5.2 innings of work. He left the Marlins with a deficit that they couldn’t overcome in a 7-3 loss on May 1.
In his previous three starts, Alcantara goes into Petco Park with an ERA of 2.75 and a 1.22 WHIP. Alcantara has been in good form despite the bad spot versus the Mariners.
He has not been at his best against the Padres in his career, though. This is one lineup that has had some moderate success against Alcantara, though the sample size isn’t the biggest.
San Diego has had some success at the plate this season. They are the seventh-best offense with 4.69 runs scored per 9 innings.
While the Padres have been without Fernando Tatis Jr., the offense has still been playing well. Conversely, the Marlins are still looking for offense in Miami.
Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres Betting Trends:
Marlins
- Record (Last 10): 5-5
- 0-5 overall in their previous five games
- 0-4 overall in their previous four games versus a right-handed starter
- 12-41 overall in thier previous 53 games as an underdog on the road
- 2-6 overall in their previous eight games on a Friday
- 3-7 overall in their previous ten games versus the Padres
Padres
- Record (Last 10): 7-3
- 4-0 overall in their previous four games as a betting favorite at home
- 9-2 overall in their previous 11 games as a betting favorite
- 5-2 overall in their previous seven games at home versus a team with a losing record
- 7-2 overall in their previous nine games versus a right-handed starter
- 7-3 overall in their previous ten games versus the Marlins
Yu Darvish doesn’t have the best numbers on paper this season, but it’s because of one bad start. Darvish has been flawless in three starts and one big mistake against the San Francisco Giants.
Darvish was tagged for 8 hits and 9 earned runs in 1.2 innings versus the Giants on April 12. However, he has been in great form otherwise and responded nicely from that poor attempt.
Darvish came back with a hot performance against the Atlanta Braves in a 2-1 win. He gave up 4 hits, and 1 earned run through 6.2 innings of work.
In his next start, Darvish outdid himself against the LA Dodgers. Darvish gave up just one hit and no runs in 6 innings.
At Petco Park this season, he’s been on fire with an ERA of 0.71 and a 0.63 WHIP. His 4.44 ERA is all due to that bad start against the Giants.
I’m backing the Padres to make it back-to-back wins over the Marlins on Friday night. The Marlins are hitting just .109 with a .174 OBP in 48 at-bats against Darvish. They have not had a fun time versus the former Cub. With Darvish at Petco, look for him to stay hot in San Diego.
