Minnesota Twins vs. Oakland Athletics Pick – MLB May 17, 2022

The Minnesota Twins are out west in California at RingCentral Coliseum for a three-game series. Last night, they started things off against the Oakland Athletics with a 3-1 win.

Chris Archer was sharp on the bump, as he didn’t allow a bad Oakland offense to do much. Archer conceded 2 hits and 1 earned run in a stellar performance.

This isn’t some major accomplishment containing the Athletics. The front office has gutted this roster and there isn’t much to like about the roster.

It’s tough on the players that show up to play for the Athletics and give their best. The front office and management don’t care, so it has to be difficult to find motivation.

An organization transfer to Las Vegas looks more like a matter of when and not if.

The A’s dropped to 15-23 with the loss and have lost four of their last five attempts. They are looking at a four-game skid with another loss tonight.

Minnesota leads the AL Central with a record of 21-15 and a three-game advantage on the Chicago White Sox. They’re benefitting from everyone else in the division faltering.

The Twins are the only team in the AL Central with a record better than .500. The White Sox are second with a record of 17-17, so it’s been a slow start.

Twins vs. Athletics Prediction:

The Athletics don’t have home-field advantage when they’re at the Coliseum. It’s more depressing than anything. The A’s would likely prefer being on the road than playing in front of a thousand, if that, fans in Oakland.

Oakland is 5-14 at home this season. They are hitting just .181 at the Coliseum in 2022. Overall, the A’s are hitting .196 and better on the road with a record of 10-9.

The A’s are 29th in the major leagues, with 3.3 runs scored per 9 innings. They are 30th in team batting average and OPS going into Tuesday night.

Oakland provides a nice spot for pitching staffs to give their numbers a bump.

Former LA Angel, Dylan Bundy, needs a boost after struggling in his last two starts. Bundy allowed 15 earned runs in 9.2 innings following such a strong start this season.

He went his first three starts across 15.1 innings with only 1 earned run allowed. As a result of the trouble against the Rays and Orioles, Bundy’s ERA has dropped to a 5.76 with a 1.32 WHIP.

Minnesota Twins vs. Oakland Athletics Betting Trends:

  • Record (Last 10): 6-4
  • 13-3 overall in their previous 16 games as a betting favorite
  • 10-3 overall in their previous 13 versus a team with a losing record
  • 10-2 overall in their previous 12 games after conceding 2 runs or fewer
  • 5-2 overall in their previous seven games on the road
  • 4-0 overall in their previous four games versus the Athletics

  • Record (Last 10): 5-5
  • 0-8 overall in their previous eight games at home versus a right-handed starter
  • 0-4 overall in their previous four games as an underdog
  • 2-9 overall in their previous 11 games after scoring 2 or fewer runs
  • 5-17 overall in their previous 22 games as an underdog at home
  • 3-10 overall in their previous 13 games after a loss

  • With the little offense that the A’s have on their roster, it’s mandatory that the pitching has a good game. However, I don’t have the most faith in James Kaprielian, who is off to a disappointing start this season.

The third-year hurler was looking to break out this season. He posted an ERA of 4.07 and a 1.22 WHIP and showed promise. However, the 28-year-old hasn’t shown improved form this season.

Kaprielian owns a 4.97 ERA and 1.42 WHIP entering this one at the Coliseum. He was throttled for 3 hits and 4 earned runs in 2 innings against the Guardians in one performance at home this season.

It’s hard to back the A’s, especially at home, where they have no incentive to play well in front of no fans. The Twins are a pretty good deal at this price over the Athletics.
