MLB Picks and Predictions for April 14th – Orioles Yankees

Yesterday was a nice 2-0 day, thanks to Milwaukee’s blanking of the Pirates, who had been off to a good start, but now have settled into their usual spot; south of .500. It’s hard to see anything changing enough this season to prevent that from being the eventual end result as well, and if it is, it will mark the 20th straight season that the Bucs will have a losing record.

Twenty seasons.

It’s hard to comprehend how they even still have a team in that city, as literally an entire generation of now-adults have NEVER seen a winning team in their city. Pirates fans, I feel for you…assuming there are any of you left…

On to the today’s MLB picks…

Today’s Free Major League Baseball Picks:

Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees -1.5 (+105)
J. Arrieta vs. P. Hughes

Just when the praise was heaping on Buck and his O’s, reality came to town in the form of the big bad Yankees. Phil Hughes had a disastrous last outing and comes into the game with a staggering 16.50 ERA. The nice thing about April baseball, isthat one good start gets everything right back on track stats-wise. I think Hughes will get exactly that today.

The Orioles have some confidence with their second-year pitcher, Jake Arrieta on the mound today, as he fared well against the Bronx Bombers last season, posting a 2-0 record and a 3.65 ERA in his two starts against them. He is going to need a very solid third start against them if the O’s hope to snap their three game skid.

However, Hughes pitched very well against Baltimore last year as well. Also posting a 2-0 record, to go with a 2.41 ERA in his three starts last season. Hughes is hoping to snap his own personal scuffles this season, in which he has allowed 11 runs and three homers in just 6 innings of work.

Hughes is too good a pitcher to struggle for too long – you don’t get to be the #2 starter in the pinstripes without some electric stuff.

I like Hughes to pitch exceptionally well today at home against a team he is very comfortable facing, and for the Yankees to both win, and cover the 1.5 run line; making +105 a very attractive line.

PICK: New York Yankees -1.5 (+105)

Philadelphia Phillies @ Washington Nationals – Total OVER 7 (+105)
C Lee vs R Zimmerman

I love microscopic run totals when the pitcher with a big name is not quite settled in to a groove yet and is pitching in a visiting ballpark. That’s the exact recipe we get tonight when Cliff Lee and his world-beater Phillies the rubber game of a three game set in the Nation’s Capital.

Washington’s bats were muted yesterday, thanks to the clockwork-like brilliance of Roy Halliday, but they aren’t the first team to endure that fate, and more than a few have bounced back with a vengeance the next day over the years.

Washington’s lineup is better than advertised, even with the unfortunately predictable injury to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman. Zimmerman has drawn early comparisons to Scott Rolen for his glove and bat at third. Sadly, it looks like he is also sharing some in the injury tendencies that plagued Rolen over the last seven or eight years of his otherwise likely H.O.F. career.

But forget all of that – what is really important in this game is the fact that Hamilton’s ERA looks great on paper, but he ain’t faced this Philly lineup yet. In his two starts last season he was 0-2 with an enormous 11.25 ERA. That alone is more than enough to make me smile that this run line isn’t 8.5 or 9.

Take the OVER 7, and smile at the oddly generous +105 line.

PICK: Run Total OVER +7 (+150)
