MLB Picks and Predictions for April 5th

Tuesday there are 14 games scheduled, with many intra-division games on the docket and a playoff rematch from last season featuring the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees as one of the top games of the day.

Today’s MLB Picks:

Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees (7:05 ET)

The pitching matchup in this game features a pair of left-handers in C.C. Sabathia (21-7, 3.18 ERA in 2010) for the Yankees going against Brian Duensing (10-3, 2.62 ERA in 2010) for the visiting Twins. Sabathia has won seven straight starts against the Twins, posting a 1.66 ERA in those seven wins. Twins stars Justin Morneau, Joe Maurer and Delmon Young are hitting .154, .207 and .143 against the Yankees ace in their careers. The Bronx Bombers have won 14 of their last 15 home games against the Twins. Duensing is making his first career regular season start against the Yankees, but he has an 0-2 record with a 11.25 ERA in two playoff stars against them over the last two seasons, both at Yankee Stadium. The pick here is the Yankees at home to continue their dominance of the Twins and Duensing in particular, and for Sabathia to pick up his first victory of the 2011 campaign.

Pick = New York Yankees (-1.5 R/L)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies (8:40 pm ET)

The pitching matchup showcases left hander Clayton Kershaw (13-10, 2.91 ERA in 2010) facing off against Jhoulys Chacin (9-11, 3.28 ERA in 2010) at Coors Field in Colorado in an early season NL West showdown. Kershaw got off to a great start this season, pitching seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the defending champion and arch-rival San Francisco Giants and their ace Tim Lincecum. Kershaw was 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his five starts against Colorado last season, and has held the Rockies’ big guns Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez in check, with Tulo posting a .185 career average against the Dodgers left-hander and Gonzalez going 2 for 10 against him last season. Chacin posted a 3-3 record against the Dodgers last season with a 2.87 ERA in his six starts. This will be his first start of 2011 as his start was pushed back by Sunday’s weather-related cancellation against the Diamondbacks. Dodgers James Loney (15 at bats) and Andre Ethier (10 at bats) have posted career averages of .500 and .333 respectively against Chacin, including two extra base hits for each. Kershaw looks to be in top form early this season and is a solid bet as a 1.5 run underdog even on the road to continue his dominance over the Rockies.

Pick = Los Angeles Dodgers (+1.5 R/L)
