MLB Picks and Predictions for April 7th

This Thursday there are ten games scheduled, including eight day games with getaway day for most of the teams and home openers for the White Sox and Pirates.

Today’s MLB Picks:

Boston Red Sox vs. Cleveland Indians (12:05pm ET)

The pitching matchup in this game features a pair of aces in left-hander Jon Lester (19-9, 3.25 ERA in 2010) for the visiting Red Sox facing of against Fausto Carmona (13-14, 3.77 ERA in 2010) for the Indians. Carmona was shelled on opening day by the Chicago White Sox, allowing ten earned runs and eleven hits in three innings of work. The Red Sox, the consensus pick to win the AL East and the odds-on favorite to win the American League, are 0-5 so far this season with their home opener against the rival Yankees looming tomorrow. Their team batting average is .190 on the young season, and their pitchers have posted a dismal 8.33 ERA. No team has ever made the World Series after starting 0-5, so the Sox have their work cut out for them. Boston has not been swept by the Indians since 2001, and they have their ace on the mound which gives them a decided advantage in this game. The pick here is for the Sox to take this one and salvage some momentum going into their series against New York.

Pick = Boston Red Sox (-1.5 R/L)

New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies (2:10 pm ET)

The pitching matchup showcases defending NL Cy Young Award-winner Roy Halladay (0-0, 1.50 ERA) for the Phillies squaring off against left-hander Jonathon Niese (9-10, 4.20 ERA) for the visiting Mets. Halladay was outstanding on opening day against the Astros, allowing one run in six innings of work but did not get the decision as the Phils did not score until he left the game. Halladay has fared very well against the Mets in his career posting six consecutive victories against them, and going 4-0 with a 2.56 ERA in four starts against the Metropolitans in 2010. The Phillies have ignited their offense since the opening day drought, hitting .337 and scoring 32 runs already this season including 16 hits and 10 runs over the Mets last night in a 10-7 victory. Niese went 1-1 with a 2.14 ERA against the Phillies last season, so he does have what it takes to shut down their offense. The smart money does not go against the best pitcher in the National League at home when he is pitching against a team the he owns. The pick here is Halladay to pick up his first victory of the 2011 season and do so with relative ease.

Pick = Philadelphia Phillies (-1.5 R/L)
