New York Mets +125 @ Detroit Tigers -135 (Total: 8.5)
Chris Capuano (6-7, 3.99, ERA) vs. Phil Coke (1-7, 4.32 ERA)
Betting on the New York Mets to do anything other than play ugly baseball and come out on the short side of the scoreboard is generally a poor idea, however tonight I see some good value lurking with Jose Reyes and company.
Chris Capuano has been mediocre most of the season, but his last three outings have been fantastic. He has 2-1 record, but an ERA of 0.95 in 19 innings pitched. Other than Cliff Lee, no NL starter has been more effective over the past two weeks.
Coke on the other hand has hit some struggles of late. He has gone 0-1 (his team is 1-2) over his last three starts and his ERA is over 5. Even more troubling is a WHIP over 1.50 and an average of just five innings pitched. Coke is going to need a better outing tonight to earn a win if Capuano remains as sharp as he has been of late.
Detroit is a clearly better baseball team, and they are at home; two big factors that usually tip the scale in a team’s favor, but again, my preference is to look for favoarable pitching matchups at “plus money” lines and tonight the Mets fit that description.
Give me the Mets to win tonight on the road behind another strong outing from the lefty Capuano.
