The Washington Nationals take a rare trip to Baltimore, where they meet for an interleague matchup with the Orioles on Monday. These two typically meet once a year, last year a four-game series that saw the Orioles take three of four.
It was a disappointing home and home for the Nats, but more importantly, it was a disappointing season. They did make the postseason, yet they fell to the Dodgers in the first-round.
Along with the Astros, the Nationals were a couple of teams who were expected a deep push in the postseason. You could have found more than a few people to pick either the Astros or Nationals to win the World Series before the season began. However, the ‘Stros failed to even make the postseason, and the Nationals didn’t get past the first-round.
The Nationals have come out hot, as they bring a 21-10 record with them to Baltimore. They won four straight before failing to complete a sweep against the Phillies yesterday.
Philadelphia pulled off the upset, beating the Nationals by a score of 6-5. Nevertheless, since scoring 23 runs on the Mets, the Nats have gone 5-2. Note that the Nationals have scored 11, 16, and 23 runs within their last eleven outings.
Gio Gonzalez will get the nod tonight in Baltimore, while the O’s will counter with Kevin Gausman. The way this season has been going for Gausman, perhaps a more fitting name would be Kevin Gascan. It’s been a rough start for him, but the Orioles have otherwise been playing quality baseball.
They picked up another W yesterday to extend their overall record to 20-10 this season. Two good baseball teams meet tonight, head below to get the Nationals vs. Orioles pick for Monday night in MLB.
Washington Nationals vs. Baltimore Orioles Pick
Gio Gonzalez (3-0, 1.64 ERA) vs. Kevin Gausman (1-3, 7.55 ERA)
Gausman has been a mess thus far, as he’s been trying to figure things out. He enters with an abysmal ERA of 7.55, including a 8.03 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in his last three outings. In his fifth year in the majors, Gausman has been relatively solid. He posted an ERA of 3.61 last season, but it’s been a work in progress for him in 2017. Note that his WHIP currently stands at 2.02, and a .408 OBA. In other words, Gausman is allowed just over 2 runners on base per inning which is very bad.
Gausman was solid in the one outing he had against the Nationals a year ago, though. He allowed no runs across 6 innings. The price in this game looks a little funky to me, and I think what you’re seeing is a reflection of that start. Gonzalez has been playing ace like baseball for the Nationals. He has an ERA of just 1.64 and a perfect 3-0 record. He hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in a single start this season.
It makes the price in this game baffling, with the sportsbooks begging for Washington money. However, it’s still tough for me to side with Gausman against Gonzalez and the Nationals. You won’t find a generous price on the Nationals too often this season. The Nats will be our Monday MLB pick.
