New York Mets vs Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Pick – August 2nd

The MLB is set up with a total of thirteen games up on the board for Thursday night. One of the matchups up on the board for August 2 will be between the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates. These two teams do not look like playoff teams this year, but they will both look to earn a nice win on Thursday. This game will start at around 7:05 PM Eastern time.

New York has earned the fourth spot in the NL East with a record of 53-55 to this point in the season. The Mets have been catching on fire as of late, winning seven games in a row. New York has put up a record of 13-5 since the All-Star break in early July. The Mets will look to keep that streak going with another win on the road.

The Pirates have gone 47-61 to this point in the season, which has them sitting in the last place of the NL Central. Pittsburgh has been trending in the opposite direction since the All-Star break, putting up a record of 3-16. The Pirates have just about knocked themselves out of the race for the NL Central, but will still look to get it going with hopes of finishing out the season stronger than right now.

The Mets have been hot as of late and it has them in a position to make a run for a wild card spot if they can keep it up. Both teams are a longshot to make it into the playoffs, but they will both look to try and get a win on Thursday night. These two teams are trending in opposite directions, but this series could be a good one as they played a series only a few nights ago.

Previous Matchups

The Mets and the Pirates played their first series of the season between July 26-29 in New York. The first game was close early until Jeff McNeil had a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to make it 3-1. Pittsburgh added a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game, but solo homers by Pete Alonso and Wilson Ramos in the bottom of the sixth gave the Mets a 6-3 win.

The second game stayed scoreless through the first five innings. Michael Conforto had a home run in the bottom of the sixth and J.D. Davis put up a two-run homer in the seventh inning to help lead New York to another win. Steven Matz pitched nine innings, allowing only five hits as the Mets won 3-0 in the second game of the series.

The final matchup in New York between these two teams was a close one. The Mets started off really strong early putting up six runs in the first inning. New York jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but Bryan Reynolds and Jose Osuna both had two-run home runs in the top of the ninth to make it a close 8-7 finish.

The Mets were able to sweep their home series against the Pirates, but now Pittsburgh will look to return the favor as the series shifts to their home field. New York was able to put a balance of pitching and hitting out against the Pirates that helped them win. The Mets were able to beat Pittsburgh deep quite a bit, which the Pirates will look to avoid in this series.

Batting

Jeff McNeil has put up a strong showing this season as he has 119 hits, 11 home runs and 46 RBI’s. Amed Rosario has earned 109 hits, 11 home runs and 47 RBI’s this season. Pete Alonso has been tearing it up as well with 199 hits, 34 homers and 77 RBI’s. Michael Conforto has earned 91 hits and 21 home runs. Todd Frazier, J.D. Davis, and Wilson Ramos have all earned double-digit home runs this season as well.

The Pirates have had some solid hitters this season. Starling Mart has 115 hits, 18 home runs and 61 RBI’s. Josh Bell has earned 113 hits, 27 home runs, 88 RBI’s and an OPS of .950. Adam Frazier has put up 102 hits. Bryan Reynolds and Kevin Newman both have over 90 hits and 35 RBI’s this season. Colin Moran has 88 hits, 11 homers and 60 RBI’s.

The Mets have a much deeper team when it comes to hitting, but the Pirates have some players that could be a danger when at bat. Pittsburgh will need some players to step up and get some big hits on Thursday night if they want to pull off a win at home.

Pitchers

Steven Matz will start on the mound for New York on Thursday night. Matz has put up a record of 6-6 through 19 starts and 21 games. He has put up an ERA of 4.32 and a WHIP of 1.380. Matz’s last game came against the Pirates in the complete-game shutout. He has only allowed four runs through 19 innings in his last three performances.

The Pirates will have Trevor Williams start at pitcher against the Mets on Tuesday. Williams has a 3-4 record through 15 starts this season. He has an ERA of 4.87 and a WHIP of 1.320 through those starts. His last start also came against Matz and the Mets. Williams allowed four hits and three runs through seven innings as he took his fourth loss on the season.

Pittsburgh has had some injury problems on the mound this season and need some of their pitchers to step up. I believe that Williams could do that on Thursday night. He put up a strong performance against New York in his last game but was outplayed by Matz. The Pirates should come out early looking to solve Matz this time around.

Pick Overview

These two teams are trending in opposite directions right now, but I believe that the Pirates will come away with the home win on Thursday night. Williams played a solid game last time against New York and I believe that he will use that as motivation to try and get the win this time. The Mets are on a long winning streak and eventually, it will come to an end. I like the Pirates to use their day off to their advantage to win the first game of this series.

BetOnline has New York listed as a -107 against the money line for Thursday night. This gives a slight advantage to the Mets, but overall says this game is pretty even. I believe that as a home underdog, the Pirates have some value. Pittsburgh should come out looking to get a win after being swept in the first series against New York.
