The MLB is set up with another exciting night of baseball on Tuesday night. Sixteen games are up on the board for September 3 as we enter the final few weeks of the regular season. One of the matchups on the board will be between the New York Mets and the Washington Nationals. This game will start at around 7:05 PM Eastern time.
New York has earned a record of 70-67 to this point in the season, which has them sitting in fourth place of the NL East. The Mets are still four games back from a wild card spot, but if they continue to play hot, they have a chance to catch it. New York has won three of their last four games including the first game of this series against Washington.
The Nationals have earned a record of 77-59 throughout this season so far. Washington is in second place of the NL East and in the top wild card spot right now. The Nationals have been hot as of late, winning sixteen of their last twenty games. Washington took a tough loss in last night’s matchup but will look to bounce back with a win on Tuesday night.
The Mets and the Nationals are both right in the hunt for a wild card spot this season. The Atlanta Braves have a nice lead on the division, so both teams will need to play well down the stretch to stay in playoff contention. I believe that with this series being in the last month of the season, it should up the intensity and lead to some great games.
The Mets and the Nationals have met in five previous series this season. Washington was able to win two of the first three series, but lost all four games of the fourth series to New York. The Mets were able to win the fifth series to extend their series record to 10-6 before this series tipped off last night. Nine of the sixteen games in those five series were decided by two runs of less.
The first game of this series was on Monday morning. The Mets jumped out with an early 2-0 lead in the second inning and added five more runs on top of it in the fourth inning. Noah Syndergaard finished with the win as he allowed three hits and no runs through seven innings. New York allowed a late homer but were still able to pull away with a nice 7-3 win to open up this series.
New York and Washington have played in a lot of competitive games this season, but the Mets have been able to go 11-6 throughout this season so far. The Nationals have had the better team, but have not been able to close out a few of these games this season and it has hurt them. I believe that Washington will come out fast on Tuesday night to bounce back with a big win.
New York has had a few strong hitters throughout this season. Pete Alonso has put up 132 hits, 43 home runs and 102 RBI’s this season. Amed Rosario has 150 hits, 12 homers and 58 RBI’s, while Jeff McNeil has 138 hits and 17 home runs. Michael Conforto has earned 122 hits, 28 home runs and 80 RBI’s. Wilson Ramos has 122 hits and 13 homers, while J.D. Davis and Todd Frazier both have over 90 hits and 18 home runs.
Anthony Rendon has had a strong season for the Nationals so far. Rendon has earned 156 hits, 32 home runs and 111 RBI’s. Juan Soto has put up 137 hits, 31 homers and 95 RBI’s this season. Adam Eaton has 139 hits and 12 homers on the season, while Trea Turner has 122 hits and 13 home runs. Victor Robles has put up 114 hits, 16 home runs and 56 RBI’s. Matt Adams, Kurt Suzuki, Howie Kendrick, Asdrubal Cabrera, and Brian Dozier all have double-digit home runs as well.
Both of these teams have strong lineups, which is a big reason why they are both competing for a playoff spot late in the season. The Nationals have two 30+ home run hitters, while Pete Alonso is competing for the top spot in the MLB with home runs. I like how these two lineups match up and I believe it will put a lot of pressure on the pitchers for Tuesday night’s game.
Jacob deGrom will start on the mound for the Mets on Tuesday night. deGrom has put up an 8-8 record through 27 starts this season. He has put up an ERA of 2.66 and a 1.024 WHIP. deGrom’s last start came against the Chicago Cubs, where he allowed five hits and four runs through seven innings as he took his eighth loss of the season.
Max Scherzer will be the starter for Washington in this division battle. Scherzer has earned an ERA of 2.46 and a WHIP of 1.016 through his 22 starts this season. In those starts, he has a record of 9-5 this season. Scherzer’s last start came against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed six hits and two runs through four and a third inning for a no decision.
Both of these pitchers have played really well this season. Scherzer has had the slightly better stat line this season, but deGrom can be lethal every time he touches the mound. Both pitchers are coming off mediocre starts in their last performance and will look to bounce back with a much needed win against their rival on Tuesday night.
The Mets were able to steal a game on the road to open up this series and have been the better of these two teams in the overall series, but I believe that Washington has a good chance to bounce back on Tuesday night. The Nationals have the better record this season and I believe they will earn a big home win to help keep their lead in the wild card race.
BetOnline has Washington listed as a -127 against the money line on Tuesday night. This implies that the Nationals will win this game around 56 percent of the time. With these two pitchers on the mound, it should be a good game, but I like Washington in this game. Although they are favored, they have the better overall team and I think it will show on Tuesday night.
