New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Pick – MLB August 1, 2022

The New York Mets and Washington Nationals open a three-game series at Nationals Park on Monday night. The Nationals are coming off a 5-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday afternoon. Andre Pallante showed up nicely with 5 hits and no runs allowed across 8 innings.

Ryan Hesley entered the game to close the Nationals out in the 9th inning. It was a textbook pitching performance from the Cardinals, while Josiah Gray struggled considerably with 5 hits and 4 earned runs through 5 innings. That was the game.

It’s crazy to think that the Nationals won the World Series, but like the Kansas City Royals after winning in 2015, they collapsed soon after. The Nationals are going into this series with a record of 35-68 and 30 games behind the Mets in the NL East.

This isn’t working out for the Nationals this season, but it is to be expected given what the roster is made up of in 2022. There isn’t too much to get excited about for the Nationals.

Meanwhile, the Mets continue to maintain a three-game lead in the NL East.

It feels like the NL East is stuck at the moment, with the Mets keeping a safe distance between them and the Atlanta Braves. The Mets are eagerly awaiting for the return of Jacob deGrom this week.

DeGrom is scheduled to make his 2022 debut in this series vs the Nationals. This is supposed to happen tomorrow at Nationals Park.

Former Nat, Max Scherzer, is up first for the Mets in the rotation at Nationals Park. Scherzer will be countered by Patrick Corbin, who is looking to bounce back after rough work recently. Head below for our free Mets vs. Nationals prediction on August 1, 2022.

Mets vs. Nationals Prediction:

The Mets will lean on the reliable arm of Max Scherzer at Nationals Park tonight. Scherzer used to pitch for the Nationals from 2015 to 2021. He won a World Series here and must have fond memories.

Scherzer was traded from the Nats to the Dodgers last year and then signed in free agency with the Mets.

He was lights out with an ERA of 1.98 and a 0.82 WHIP in 11 games with the Dodgers last year. The Dodgers didn’t win the World Series, but it wasn’t because of Scherzer.

The 38-year-old is pitching in ace form again this season. Scherzer is going into Nationals Park with an ERA of 2.09 and a 0.90 WHIP.

He’s coming off a stellar performance against the Yankees in the Subway Series. Scherzer lasted 7 innings with 5 hits and no earned runs in a 3-2 win.

Scherzer saved his best for the Yankees, but he’s been great with 2 or fewer runs allowed in eight straight performances.

Across his last three starts, Scherzer notched an ERA of 1.86 and a 1.14 WHIP. Look for him to be in good shape at Nationals Park tonight.

  • 2-5 overall in their previous seven games versus the Mets at home
  • 2-12 overall in their previous 14 games at home
  • 5-12 overall in their previous 17 games versus the National League

  • Patrick Corbin is coming off a couple of poor performances versus the Braves and Diamondbacks. He allowed 10 earned runs and 17 hits through 10 innings.

Corbin was also bad three backs, with 8 hits and 4 earned runs to the Braves.

He’s been hideous with an ERA of 13.50 and a 2.62 WHIP in his previous three starts. This has almost been consistent with the overall body of work. Corbin owns a 6.49 ERA and 1.77 WHIP.

Opponents have reached base at an efficient clip of .376 against Corbin this season. He has a tough assignment against a Mets team scoring 4.74 runs per 9 innings for the fourth-best unit in the majors.

Look for the Mets to be the team to beat at Nationals Park. Scherzer should carry the load against his former team in a 6-3 win in Washington.
