New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Pick – MLB August 2, 2022

The highly anticipated debut of Jacob deGrom in 2022 is scheduled for tonight at Nationals Park. DeGrom has been absent with a stress reaction in his shoulder and will finally get the nod tonight.

The Mets started off fast in this series, as they rode two 3-run innings to a 7-3 win. They scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to pull away for good. That’s how the game would end, with the Mets recording a 4-run win.

MAX SCHERZER STEADY
Scherzer had a fine evening at Nationals Park, as he allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs through 6.2 innings. After allowing a run in the opening frame, Scherzer settled in against his former team.

The Mets advanced to 65-37 and a 3.5-game lead on the Atlanta Braves. They’ve been keeping a safe distance from the Braves after Atlanta nearly erased a double-digit deficit.

The NL East race could go down to the wire, with the Braves still alive and well.

However, it might be tough for the Braves to overcome this small hole with the 1-2 punch of deGrom and Scherzer back in the rotation. It’s impressive the Mets are 65-37 and deGrom hasn’t thrown a pitch yet.

It wasn’t that long ago that deGrom was the only thing keeping the Mets afloat. He won the Cy Young in 2018 after a special individual effort, but the Mets were 77-85.

The Mets had no offense back then, but now they no longer have to rely exclusively on their pitching. They can still win low-scoring games with this unit, though.

Mets vs. Nationals Prediction:

The Nationals’ miserable pitching staff was on full display again last night. In a close 4-3 game, they allowed things to get away for another loss this season.

The Nats are 30th in the majors with 5.59 runs conceded per 9 innings.

They are also the worst in OPS, with a .784 yielded to their opponents. It’s a team issue, with the rotation and bullpen both struggling to find consistency.

SECOND MAJOR LEAGUE START
Cory Abbott will make his second major league career start tonight. He appeared in eight games in his first season a year ago. That didn’t go well, but Abbott has been operating well out of the bullpen in 2022.

Abbott has an ERA of 2.25 and a 0.75 WHIP, though this is only 4 innings of work. He doesn’t have much experience and has a tough assignment against the Mets in this one.

The Mets are fourth in the majors with 4.76 runs per 9 innings.

They’re hitting .257 for the fifth-best mark in the major leagues. This shouldn’t be an easy stroll in the park for Abbott. Then the ball is handed over to a bullpen that is one of the worst in 2022.

New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Betting Trends:

Mets

  • Record (Last 10): 7-3
  • 6-0 overall in their previous six games after scoring at least 5 runs
  • 8-1 overall in their previous nine games om the road
  • 5-0 overall in their previous five games versus a right-handed starter
  • 10-2 overall in their previous 12 games versus a team with a winning percentage worse than 40%
  • 6-2 overall in their previous eight games at Washington

Nationals

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 3-7 overall in their previous ten games on a Tuesday
  • 2-13 overall in their previous 15 games at home
  • 22-59 overall in their previous 81 games at home
  • 17-65 overall in their previous 82 games versus the NL East
  • 18-43 overall in their previous 61 games after a loss

  • DeGrom is finally back and ready to make an impact right away. He posted an ERA of 1.08 and a 0.55 WHIP through 15 starts in 2021 before suffering the injury.

The Cy Young winner has posted a 1.70 ERA, 2.43 ERA, 2.38 ERA, and 1.08 ERA in the last four years.

The Nationals are hitting .170 with a .253 OBP against deGrom in 102 at-bats. Juan Soto is the only Nat to go deep against deGrom in his career.

DeGrom may not be perfect in his return to the hill tonight. The Mets likely don’t test his longevity on Tuesday night. However, he should still have the advantage over Abbott. Another runline cover by the Mets looks good.
