The Mets started off fast in this series, as they rode two 3-run innings to a 7-3 win. They scored 3 runs in the top of the 6th to pull away for good. That’s how the game would end, with the Mets recording a 4-run win.
The Mets advanced to 65-37 and a 3.5-game lead on the Atlanta Braves. They’ve been keeping a safe distance from the Braves after Atlanta nearly erased a double-digit deficit.

However, it might be tough for the Braves to overcome this small hole with the 1-2 punch of deGrom and Scherzer back in the rotation. It’s impressive the Mets are 65-37 and deGrom hasn’t thrown a pitch yet.
It wasn’t that long ago that deGrom was the only thing keeping the Mets afloat. He won the Cy Young in 2018 after a special individual effort, but the Mets were 77-85.
The Mets had no offense back then, but now they no longer have to rely exclusively on their pitching. They can still win low-scoring games with this unit, though.

Mets vs. Nationals Prediction:
The Nationals’ miserable pitching staff was on full display again last night. In a close 4-3 game, they allowed things to get away for another loss this season.
They are also the worst in OPS, with a .784 yielded to their opponents. It’s a team issue, with the rotation and bullpen both struggling to find consistency.
Abbott has an ERA of 2.25 and a 0.75 WHIP, though this is only 4 innings of work. He doesn’t have much experience and has a tough assignment against the Mets in this one.
They’re hitting .257 for the fifth-best mark in the major leagues. This shouldn’t be an easy stroll in the park for Abbott. Then the ball is handed over to a bullpen that is one of the worst in 2022.

DeGrom may not be perfect in his return to the hill tonight. The Mets likely don’t test his longevity on Tuesday night. However, he should still have the advantage over Abbott. Another runline cover by the Mets looks good.
