The New York Yankees held on for a 7-6 win at Camden Yards in the series opener last night. After taking a 7-3 lead, the Yankees got careless in the bottom of the 7th and gave up 3 runs. It was a close finish, but the bullpen closed off the Orioles for the rest of the game.

Aldoris Chapman was well off the mark, as he was tagged for 3 earned runs and just 1 out recorded. Chapman and starter Jameson Taillon are the only Yankees that had problems. Taillon lasted just 2.2 innings with 4 hits and 2 earned runs conceded.
With the victory, the Yankees are up to 65-30 and a 12-game lead on the Tampa Bay Rays. The AL East is all Yankees, but you can’t write them in as the divisional winners just yet. There is time, albeit, it would make for one epic collapse and finger-pointing in the Bronx.
It was an unlikely winning streak, as the Orioles put everything together to get above .500. They lost a 5-4 final to the Rays to end the skid, but finished off the first half with a 6-4 win to beat the Rays in two of three games.
Expect a bit of regression for the Orioles post-All-Star break. This is one team that didn’t want to see time off. They had everything firing on all cylinders and didn’t want the chance to cool off on a break.
The Yankees will send ace Gerritt Colt to the bump at Camden Yards for this start. Jordan Lyles of the Orioles will go for the home team in Baltimore.

Yankees vs. Orioles Prediction:
Gerritt Cole is having a fine campaign in 2022. Do I want to say a great season? Not for the money Cole is making. He’s making Cy Young money, so that’s where I’d like to see the veteran.
He carries an ERA of 3.15 and a 0.85 WHIP in his previous three starts entering tonight. Through his last 14 innings on the bump, Cole allowed 2 earned runs.
The O’s are hitting .196 with 2 home runs allowed in 127 at-bats versus Cole. He should have control of this matchup at Camden Yards.
The Yankees have the second-best pitching staff in the majors with 3.3 runs allowed per 9 innings. They have held opponents to an impressive .216 batting average. We didn’t see it last night from Aldoris Chapman, though.

Jordan Lyles is expected to get the nod for the Orioles. He’s in his usual form with an ERA of 4.76 and a 1.42 WHIP this season.
He’s been strong at home, though, with a 2.72 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. Will it help versus a Yankee team that has frustrated him in the past?
The Yankees are second in the majors with a bullpen ERA of 2.96 and a 1.12 WHIP. We didn’t see it last night with Chapman nearly giving up the game, but they’re generally reliable.
After a hot run to end the first half, expect the O’s to regress somewhat. They likely don’t collapse, but back down to earth in a sense. With Cole on the bump, look for the Yankees to cover the runline at Camden Yards.
