New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles Pick – MLB May 17, 2022

The New York Yankees are in Baltimore for a four-game AL East series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees opened the series with a 6-2 win on Monday night. Luis Severino was in top form, as he held the Orioles to 1 hit and 1 earned run.

The rock-solid bullpen took care of the rest at Camden Yards. Josh Donaldson continues to heat up at the plate, as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run. He was an important offseason acquisition and is the key to making this offense click.

When I say click for the Yankees, I’m alluding to the fact the Yankees’ offense has to be consistent this season. They’ve had terrific teams on paper over the past few years, but consistency and clutch hitting hasn’t been at the forefront.

As Donaldson heats up, the rest of this lineup has been producing as well. They are scoring runs consistently through the second month of the season. Whether this translates in October is anyone’s guess, though.

It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do at the trade deadline this season if they’re still hitting well. From what we’ve seen so far, perhaps adding another starter to the mix wouldn’t hurt. The bullpen is more than fine and they don’t have to touch anything there.

The Yankees are 26-9 on the season with a 5.5-game lead in the AL East.

The Bronx Bombers are clear in the AL East at the moment. They figured to face pressure from a good-looking Blue Jays squad, but there is a lot of baseball to be played this season.

The Orioles will send Spenser Watkins to the mound, as they look to improve on a record of 14-22. The O’s are last and 12.5 games behind the Yanks in the AL East. Jameson Taillon counters for New York.

Yankees vs. Orioles Prediction:

Jameson Taillon was a sharp acquisition for the Yankees last year. Finding cheaper options in the rough instead of overpaying for big names is a better plan for winning a World Series.

Taillon is looking to improve on an alright first year with the Yankees. He handled the pressure pretty well. Many pitchers go to the Bronx and can’t handle the pressure in their first year.

Taillon has posted an ERA of 2.93 and a 1.17 WHIP going into tonight. He’s been in his best form, with 2 or fewer earned runs conceded in his six starts on the bump.

In his last three outings going into this one, Taillon has recorded an ERA of 2.81 and a 1.25 WHIP. Against a tough Toronto lineup, Taillon held the Jays to 2 runs in a 5-3 win last week.

It was the second straight performance that Taillon shut down the Jays. He allowed 1 run eight days earlier in Toronto.

He’s been receiving good run support, as has the rest of the Jays’ offense. The Yankees are fourth in the majors with 4.96 runs scored per 9 innings. They are second in OPS and first in home runs a game,

The Yanks are piling up runs with the long ball. They are hitting an average of 1.49 home runs per game for the best mark in the major leagues.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles Betting Trends:

Yankees

  • Record (Last 10): 8-2
  • 7-0 overall in their previous seven games on the road versus a right-handed starter
  • 9-2 overall in their previous 11 games on the road
  • 21-6 overall in their previous 27 games as a betting favorite
  • 8-2 overall in their previous ten games versus a team with a losing record
  • 8-1 overall in their previous nine games versus the AL East

Orioles

  • Record (Last 10): 4-6
  • 12-41 overall in their previous 53 games versus the AL East
  • 25-61 overall in their previous 86 games as an underdog
  • 1-5 overall in their previous six games
  • 28-73 overall in their previous 101 games versus a right-handed starter
  • 32-80 overall in their previous 112 games after a loss

  • Spenser Watkins has room to improve after a spotty start on the mound this season. Watkins has an ERA of 5.19 and a 1.58 WHIP in 26 innings.

He’s allowed the opposition to get on base at a .364 clip. He’s not coming off a promising performance either.

Watkins was KO’d against the St. Louis Cardinals six days ago. The Cards got to Watkins for 8 hits and 7 runs in 3.2 innings of work. His ERA ballooned to 7.62 with a 1.92 WHIP in his last three attempts.

Expect Watkins to have a tough time getting through this Yankees lineup. New York is hot at the dish with at least 5 runs scored in six of their previous seven games. They have a .371 OBP and 7.6 runs per 9 innings in their last five.

I’m looking at the Yankees to win and do it by at least 2 runs on Tuesday night at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
