Gerrit Cole (6-3, 3.00 ERA) vs. Tanner Roark (2-2, 6.41 ERA)
The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays meet again on Tuesday after the Blue Jays got the series started with a win on Monday evening. It was an impressive 11-5 win for the Blue Jays, as they exploded through the 3rd and 4th inning. They scored 9 runs between the 3rd and 4th to take a 9-1 lead over the Yankees in Buffalo. Vlad Jr. had a big game at the plate, as he went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI on the night.
It’s going to be important that he develops into a franchise hitter if the Blue Jays are going to be a contender in the next few years. I think they’re close to being a good team, but not close enough to compete with the Yankees and Rays in the AL East. They tried hard at the trade deadline to fill their rotation with competent arms. However, adding an arm like Robbie Ray and Tanner Roark isn’t exactly ground breaking.
The Blue Jays have added several new pitchers to their rotation in the last year. Chase Anderson, Robbie Ray, Tanner Roark, Hyun Jin Ryu, and Taijuan Walker are all relative newcomers to the organization. The signing of Ryu was a big move by the Blue Jays. They needed a centerpiece for the rotation after Marcus Stroman went to the Mets. Ryu was the type of move to make waves.
I think the move to acquire Taijuan Walker was a big positive for the Blue Jays. Ray, though, had been struggling with the Diamondbacks and they took a gamble on him. The thought process was that a change of scenery was in order for Ray. He’s struggling with the Jays as well, so that may have not been it. He goes into free agency in the offseason, with his issues arising at the worst possible time.
Roark signed with the Blue Jays this past offseason. He spent six seasons with the Nationals before splitting time with the Reds and Athletics. Roark is on pace for the worst season of his career. With less than a week left in the season, he will certainly finish with his worst numbers. He’ll look to get back on track versus the Yankees on Tuesday night. Former Astro, Gerrit Cole, is expected to counter for the Yankees in Buffalo. Head below for our free New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays pick for September 22, 2020.
New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Betting Odds:
NY Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays Prediction:
Tanner Roark is likely going to be left off the Blue Jays’ postseason rotation. They’re closing in on clinching the final wildcard in the American League. The Blue Jays own a record of 28-26, while the Seattle Mariners are 24-30 and the first team out.
The Mariners are still alive, but on life support right now. They need a lot of help from the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles down the stretch, though. Last night there was no help from the Yankees, but they should be able to with Roark on the bump.
Roark goes into Tuesday with an ERA of 6.41 and 1.75 WHIP. Teams are hitting .304 through nine games in 2020 against Roark. The power numbers have been fantastic for the Yankees versus Roark. Through 104 at-bats, the Yanks have smacked Roark with 12 home runs and 18 RBI. This will be the third straight start for Roark against the Yankees.
He recently faced them on September 9 and 16. Roark gave up 8 earned runs and a staggering 6 home runs through 8 innings in those two outings. The Yankees took him deep often. In Roark’s previous three performances, he’s posted an ERA of 8.76, 1.70 WHIP, and .368 OBA in his last three tilts.
Roark has a tough challenge with Cole on the other side tonight. Cole holds an ERA of 3.00 and 0.98 WHIP. For how much he’s being paid, Cole has been just okay overall. However, Cole has been hot of late, with an ERA of 0.90 and 0.70 WHIP in his last three outings.
He is coming off a 13-2 win over the Blue Jays last week. Cole gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run in 7 innings. After a lazy performance on Monday night, expect the Yankees to bounce back with a much better effort tonight. Whether it’s Cole or the offense carrying the load, the Yanks should be able to get out of Tuesday evening with a win by 2 or more runs.
