Oakland Athletics vs. LA Angels Pick – MLB August 12, 2020

Chris Bassitt (1-0, 1.08 ERA) vs. Griffin Canning (0-2, 3.14 ERA)

The Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Angels will wrap up their three-game series on Wednesday at Angel Stadium. The Angels cruised past the Athletics on Tuesday with a 6-0 win. Anthony Rendon connected on a solo shot in the fourth inning and the runs kept coming. The Angels closed the A’s out in that frame, as they scored 4 more runs to take a 5-0 lead. The Rendon home run would have been enough for a win, because the Athletics couldn’t find the scoreboard.

Dylan Bundy spun another gem for the Angels, as he went 7 innings with just 4 hits conceded and no runs. He didn’t run into any problems, and probably could have completed that game on his own without going to the bullpen. Bundy was able to reach double-digit strikeouts with a total of ten. We called that Bundy was going to have an effective game and he exceeded expectations.

That was a solid win on the Angels to build the MLB bankroll up some more. The whole night was a success, with four picks and four wins. That Diamondbacks-Rockies game got interesting in the ninth, but the Rox held on for a 8-7 win. A team is never out of the game at Coors Field, that’s for sure. Going to the back of the bullpen even with a big lead isn’t advised in Denver. That kind of stuff will happen. You would think the home team would know by now.

The Athletics will be looking to avoid a sweep on Wednesday. They fell in a close one Monday by a score of 10-9. The offense on Monday was popping, but turned around the next day and fell asleep at the plate. They managed just 4 hits against Bundy and 1 against the bullpen.

If Bundy can keep this going, and somebody else steps up in the rotation, the Angels might be more dangerous than their record of 7-11 indicates. Griffin Canning might be that guy in the rotation. Canning gets the starting nod, while Chris Bassitt is expected to counter for the A’s. Head below for our free Oakland Athletics vs. LA Angels pick for August 12, 2020.

Oakland Athletics vs. LA Angels Prediction:

Chris Bassitt has been taking charge for the Athletics in the rotation. He looks motivated to lead the A’s and has been one of the most under the radar pitchers in the American League so far. There have been a few, like Spencer Turnbull of the Tigers isn’t getting all that much attention but is pitching like a champ in Detroit.

Bassitt through three games has done everything asked of him on the bump. The Athletics have won all of their games with Bassitt starting, which have been against the Angels, Mariners, and Astros. He didn’t have any issues mowing down hitters at the plate.

Bassitt heads into Wednesday with an ERA of 1.08 and 0.90 WHIP. In 11 innings of work, Bassitt has allowed just 2 runs. He was in his best form against the Angels on July 27 in his first outing of the season. Bassitt made it look easy against a tough lineup, as he prevented the Angels from scoring a run with him on the bump.

The A’s went on to beat the Angels by a score of 3-0 in that meeting. The 31-year-old received the most work of his career in 2019 and was effective with an ERA of 3.91 and 1.19 WHIP. He appears ready to build on that effort to get to the next step of his career, though it has only been three starts for him so far in 2020.

24-year-old Griffin Canning is looking for improvement from his first season in the majors. Canning pitched in 28 games and he was fine for a first-year pitcher with an ERA of 4.58 and 1.22 WHIP. There were good and bad moments like most rookies go through in their career. Canning has been in good form with an ERA of 3.14, though he must cut down on batters reaching the bases.

His WHIP is too high right now with a 1.60, but has done an excellent job against the A’s. The Athletics are hitting .188 against Canning in 69 at-bats. If he can try and work around Ramon Laureano then he’d be better off. Laureno is the one batter that has abused Canning in the Oakland lineup. Otherwise, Canning has been shutting down the rest of Athletics. At almost even money, the UNDER is good value.
