We kept rolling last night as we picked up an easy win on the Phillies vs. Mets UNDER. The Phillies won 2-1, as both Cliff Lee and Zack Wheeler both pitched very well and for once, the Mets bullpen didn’t bring a gas can out to the mound and spoil a good starting performance. But for the Mets, the 2-1 loss is the furthest thing from their concerns. Instead the UCL season-ending injury to pitching sensation Matt Harvey casts a pall over what little enthusiasm could be mustered over some late season promising young players showing some hope for next year. As a baseball fan, I’m hoping his injury isn’t as severe as it appears and that he can make a quick return.
I’ve run off seven of my last eight, and am looking to keep the beat rolling tonight with another pick on game totals, this time we will shift our focus to a fantastic series in the American League.
Today’s Free Pick:
Baltimore Orioles +121 at Boston Red Sox -130 (Total: 9)
Wei-Yin Chen (7-6, 3.19 ERA) vs. Felix Doubront (9-6, 3.79 ERA)
Baltimore enters this pivotal series against the division-leading Red Sox trailing by 5 ½ games in the AL East and two games on the outside looking in for the final wildcard slot. TO say this is a do-or-die series for the Orioles might be a teensy bit of hyperbole, but it is a critical series for Baltimore’s waning postseason hopes. They are 6-8 over their last 14 games, and a flat 5-5 over their last ten.
In their last ten games, they have scored 10,9,8,7 and 4 runs in their wins. In their losses they have tallied just 1,3,4,3, and 4. In short, if they score they win, if they score a little less, they lose. That indicates some pitching deficiencies; nothing dire, as they aren’t LOSING games in which they score, but important in that they are losing games where they score three and four – they are going to have to slug their way to the playoffs if they want a repeat postseason berth in 2013.
Boston meanwhile, continues to chug along. A few times it appeared that Tampa Bay might surge past them, but time and time again the Sox have held them off and maintain a 1 ½ game lead heading into this series.
Neither pitcher has been dominant this season, but both have been serviceable. Chen has gone at least six innings in each of his eight starts since joining the starting rotation. Doubront is coming off a domain performance against the Dodgers last week where he went eight innings and allowed just a single run.
It seems a little counter-intuitive given these two teams slugging offenses and the lack of high-profile starters, but I like the UNDER tonight. These two have played ten times this season and hit double digit runs only once. With the run total set at 9 tonight, that should give us a little room to spare.
Free Pick: Run TOTAL UNDER 9
